The Art Center of National Chung Hsing University has invited renowned Taiwanese calligrapher Chang Chih-Hung to present “Blossom Time: A Calligraphy Exhibition by Chang Chih-Hung” from November 27 to December 25, 2025. Over eighty artworks will be showcased, featuring primarily running, cursive, and clerical scripts, including several monumental clerical-script works that span over two meters in height. The sweeping strokes emphasize dynamic movement and rhythmic vitality, reflecting the inner world of the artist, and each stroke carries an emotional pulse that gives expression to his life experiences. Multiple pieces of Chang’s signature “broken-style” calligraphy are also included among the exhibits, created with damaged or deteriorated brushes. Through the interplay of flying-white strokes and dry-brush textures, these works embody the artist’s deep contemplation on the vicissitudes of time. Regardless of script or style, each piece reveals Chang’s mastery of calligraphy and his unique artistic vision.

Chang Chih-Hung was born in Yilan City in 1962. He holds an MA from the Graduate Institute of Asian Humanities at Huafan University and a BA from the Department of Fine Arts at Chinese Culture University. He studied seal carving under Tseng Shao-Chieh, color calligraphy under Shih Tzu-Chen, and Chinese ink painting under Chiang Chao-Shen and Ou Hao-Nien. Chang has taught art classes at Chiao Tai High School and Feng Nan Junior High School in Taichung, and has held concurrent positions as a lecturer or associate professor at National Chung Hsing University, National Chin-Yi University of Technology, Providence University, Hungkuang University, Chienkuo Technology University, Mingdao University, among others. He has also taught calligraphy at the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts. Since 1994, he has served as an instructor in the calligraphy program at the Taichung City Dadun Cultural Center, dedicating himself to calligraphy education and creative work. Since his first solo exhibition in 1991, Chang has been invited to hold solo exhibitions at the Taichung City Dadun Cultural Center, Taichung City Huludun Cultural Center, Taichung City Seaport Art Center, National Changhua Living Art Center, and many other venues both domestically and abroad, and he has participated in over thirty group exhibitions.

The representation of contemporary calligraphy is no longer confined to ink on paper, but can incorporate diverse materials and formats. Chang’s calligraphy is grounded in profound traditional techniques while consistently embracing innovation. In recent years, he has pioneered “enamel calligraphy,” applying glaze onto steel plates and firing them at high temperatures, thereby overcoming the traditional limitation of calligraphy to indoor display. He has also created “art-tech partition screens,” integrating LED lighting and laser engraving to evoke the visual atmosphere of stone rubbings through light and shadow. Additionally, his “leather calligraphy” involves writing on natural leather and then hammering from the back to create a relief textural effect. In this exhibition, Chang collaborates with young artist Lai Chu-Ying, a four-time gold medalist in the gouache painting category of the National Art Exhibition. Using pure mineral pigments as an underlayer, Chang writes on top, merging ink with the shimmering layers and richness of mineral pigments. This innovative fusion results in “gouache calligraphy,” whose striking visual presence highlights the cross-disciplinary and multidimensional expressive power of calligraphy.

The artist believes that “calligraphy is not merely a static art, but one that continually changes along with the times, integrating into daily life and resonating with the human spirit.” This year has been filled with growth and blessings in his artistic journey. Therefore, he has titled the exhibition “Blossom Time,” inspired by the poem Walking Again and Again by Liu Shuo, symbolizing the beauty of flourishing years. Many of the artworks respond to the theme of the exhibition with elegant phrases and expressive brushwork, hoping to move viewers and share happiness and blessings with them. We sincerely invite everyone to attend and enjoy the exhibition.
