National Chung Hsing Universtiy (NCHU) has become a major focal point for the exchange and interaction between domestic academia and Sri Lanka. On June 1, 2018, the academic exchange delegation from Sri Lanka arrived at NCHU to attend the 2nd “Taiwan-Sri Lanka Academic Exchange Network 2018” seminar and workshop, co-organized by NCHU and University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka(佩拉德尼亞大學). Both universities also signed the MOU and agreed to work more closely on exchange of visits, and students, academia research.

The exchange delegation is led by Prof. R.M.G. Rajapakse of University of Peradeniya and eight-member delegation that include professors and postdoctoral researchers. Fuh-Sheng Shieu(薛富盛), President of NCHU, Prof. R.M.G. Rajapakse and two faculty members witnessed the signing of the memorandum, that has allowed NCHU to make a big step in its South development.

The theme of this year’s seminar is “energy, environment and nano technology” and a workshop was held on June 1, 2018. NCHU’s Department of Chemistry demonstrated to the postdoctoral researchers from University of Peradeniya of manufacturing solar cell devices. Through on-site demonstration and the valuable equipment inspection procedure, NCHU has allowed Sri Lankan researchers to gain better understanding of energy development in Taiwan and the current nano development situation. The seminar was held on June 2 and 3, 2018, whereby both universities had four exchange and interaction sessions and nine professors from NCHU, that included environmental engineering, biotechnology, materials, civil and environmental, chemistry, physics, chemical engineering and electrical engineering presented research papers.

To allow better understanding of Sri Lankan culture for faculty and students, NCHU also held the “Sri Lanka Cultural Exhibition.” Scholars familiar with Sri Lanka affairs or those with an interest in Sri Lanka were invited to the event to share their experiences. Furthermore, a cooking session was arranged for the students from Sri Lanka to introduce to the participants the taste and experience of local Ceylon tea and authentic food, traditional outfits, arts and culture and etc.
NCHU formed the Sri Lanka volunteer group and this year, a two-week overseas trip to the orphanage in Sri Lanka has been organized. Jenn-Wen Huang(黃振文), Vice President of NCHU awarded a flag to the head delegate of the volunteer group and extended best regards to the team who will be giving volunteering services at the upcoming trip. He also hopes that the trip will not only be beneficial to those who have received the services but a more fulfilling life experience for those giving the services.

Mu-Min Chen(陳牧民), Dean of Office of International Affairs, is the pioneer of the Taiwan-Sri Lanka academia exchange and interaction. He led three delegations to Sri Lanka from 2016 to 2017 and established a platform for cooperation. He said that Sri Lanka is the fastest growing country in South Asia and it is also politically stable. In the past, in absence of a formal networking platform, Taiwan and Sri Lanka did not have many academia exchange opportunities. Currently, there are very few Taiwanese businessmen investing and only twenty Taiwanese student population in Sri Lanka.

Last year, NCHU established the “Taiwan-Sri Lanka Academic Exchange Network” within the school campus with support from the Ministry of Education’s “Connecting Taiwan Project”. The network aims to promote better integration of bilateral relation Taiwan and Sri Lanka. It is hoped that the collaborative platform that the schools has established could promote regular exchange and interaction among researchers on professional research issues, attract outstanding foreign students to study in Taiwan, while sending Taiwanese students to Sri Lanka for volunteering work and field research. All in all, “Taiwan-Sri Lanka Academic Exchange Network” seeks to open up a window of opportunity in building diplomatic ties with Sri Lanka through Taiwan’s strength in science and technology under the current situation when both countries have yet to establish any official diplomatic ties.
