National University System of Taiwan (NUST) Hosts Symposium to Strengthen Cooperation, Exchanges and Sharing with ASEAN and South-Asian Countries

Taiwan’s higher education system has been hit hard by the crisis of a declining birth rate in recent years. Due to the large number of colleges and universities, educational resources are scattered. With limited resources, schools urgently need to think about how to effectively promote the development of school affairs, implement the government’s plans, and ensure students' right to receive education and sustain the international competitiveness of schools.
In order to establish a cooperative platform for regional communication, ten national universities in central Taiwan, including National Chung Hsing University, National United University, National Taichung University of Education, National Taiwan University of Sport, National Chin-yi University of Technology, National Chi Nan University, National Changhua University of Education, National Yunlin University of Science and Technology, National Formosa University, and National Chiayi University, are preparing for the establishment of the National University System of Taiwan (NUST), seeking multi-faceted links such as teaching resources, research and development, network of graphics and resources, international affairs, industry, academia, and intellectual property, among others. The intention is to establish a complementary effect and a deep-rooted development capability for the NUST.
In response to the New Southbound Policy of the Ministry of Education, the NUST held a symposium, Strengthening Cooperation, Exchanges and Sharing with ASEAN and South-Asian Countries, at National Chung Hsing University, on August 28, 2020. The meeting was hosted by President Fuh-Sheng Shieu, Vice-President of National Chi Nan International University, Professor Tung-Wen Sun, Vice-President of National Taiwan University of Sport, Professor Chen-Kang Chang, and 16 other executives from 8 schools were invited to attend the meeting to brainstorm and discuss new southbound national marketing, collective planning of teaching resources for international students, and the Ministry of Education’s new southbound plan work matters.
The NUST is expected to function in the future, with the goal of sharing teaching resources, research and development, network of graphics and resources, international affairs, and industry-university intellectual property, gradually integrating the resources of each school, improving the learning environment of each school, and pursuing teaching innovation. The important policy promotion issues of the Higher Education Sprout Project demonstrate the horizontal linking power of the university system, to provide substantial benefits to teachers and students in the system.
