National Chung Hsing University Established the Office of Sustainable Development, Declaring That Comprehensive Net Zero Emissions Will Be Achieved in 2040

National Chung Hsing University (NCHU) held the unveiling ceremony of the Office of Sustainable Development on September 28, 2022, declaring that the goal is to achieve 100% net zero emissions by 2040, and becoming the earliest university in Taiwan to declare that it will reach the standard. National Chung Hsing University will use Xixinba Ranch in Wuri, Taichung as a demonstration area to introduce smart management systems and carbon fixation technologies. It is estimated that the Ranch will achieve 100% carbon neutrality by 2025, and then National Chung Hsing University will implement the operation model to the entire campus to achieve the goal of sustainable development of the campus.
As NCHU President Fuh-Sheng Shieu said, the government has set a net zero emission target for 2050, and National Chung Hsing University has declared that the target will be achieved ahead of schedule by 2040. NCHU College of Agriculture & Natural Resources and Academy of Circular Economy have professional teachers for carbon reduction and carbon sink research, while College of Science and College of Engineering have professional teams for research and development of green energy and carbon negative technologies. In addition, the campus covers more than 8,000 hectares of four experimental forests: Wenshan Experimental Forest, Huisun Experimental Forest, Dongshi Experimental Forest, and Xinhua Experimental Forest. Therefore, National Chung Hsing University is confident of becoming a model university in Taiwan to promote this goal. Through the establishment of the Committee of Sustainable Develop ment and the Office of Sustainable Development, the research energy and administrative resources in the university are integrated to jointly move towards this goal.
As Director of Office of Sustainable Development, NCHU Chun-Liang Lin said, National Chung Hsing University has drawn up a phased goal of net zero emissions, and it is expected to achieve 50% of the goal by 2025 and 70% of the goal by 2035. At the present stage, the Xixinba Ranch is used as a demonstration field to introduce AI core technology, intelligent cultivation, intelligent detection, intelligent animal husbandry and green energy facilities. With the sun tracking solar power generation equipment, power generation system from waste eutectic magnesium alloy and catalytic waste water electrolysis hydrogen production, NCHU introduce energy Internet of Things, collect energy and environmental big data through communication technology, and monitor electricity production information and data on a daily basis. Through measures such as greenhouse gas inventory, greenhouse gas reduction, and offsetting remaining emissions, it is expected that the Ranch will be the first to achieve carbon neutrality in 2025, and carbon reduction and carbon fixation experience of the Ranch will be expanded to the entire campus and affiliated sites in the next stage.
