The Art Center of National Chung Hsing University is hosting the “New Collections of Oracle Bone Script: 2024 Boris Lu and the Chinese Oracle Bone Script Art Association Calligraphy Joint Exhibition” from September 14th to October 20th, 2024. Through this exhibition, we hope to enable the public to understand the meaning of oracle bone script, appreciate the artistic quality of pictographs, and create a lasting vitality for oracle bone script that resonates deeply with viewers.

The university has invited Mr. Boris Lu, who has been actively promoting oracle bone script, along with selected works from members of the Chinese Oracle Bone Script Art Association to exhibit on campus. The exhibition, titled “New Collections of Oracle Bone Script,” symbolizes the prosperity of the event which staged in NCHU and aims to promote a new outlook on oracle bone script based on traditional culture. The exhibition brings together over 40 participants and nearly 100 works, setting a precedent for both solo and group exhibitions.

Boris Lu, born in 1964 in Kaohsiung, graduated from the Physics Department of National Taiwan Normal University. He currently serves as the honorary founding president of the Chinese Oracle Bone Script Art Association, a board director of the Republic of China Seal Engraving Society, a director of the Taichung Calligraphy Society, and an advisor to the Taiwan Guqin Association. He has also served as the founding president of the Tuofang Seal Collection, president of the Hailian Calligraphy Society, and as an instructor for the seal engraving club at National Chung Hsing University. He has been invited to hold 26 solo exhibitions at venues including the Taichung Dadun Cultural Center, Huludun Cultural Center, Port Art Center, and Art Think Gallery. He is skilled in calligraphy and seal engraving, and he also studies ancient scripts. He has published 25 books on seal engraving, calligraphy, oracle bone script, and related topics.

The Chinese Oracle Bone Script Art Association was founded in 2019, the 120th anniversary of the discovery of oracle bone script. It was established by Boris Lu, Zhang Fu-ming, and Zhou Jun-chen, then the association quickly grew to over 140 members, including international participants from Canada, France, and other countries. With a focus on art, the association aims to present known oracle bone characters and enhance their practical use in contemporary society, increasing public awareness. Members can incorporate oracle bone script elements into various art mediums such as calligraphy, seal engraving, painting, sculpture, and crafts, showcasing a blend of tradition and new ideas. The association also invites experts to serve as advisors. They continue to organize lectures, workshops, joint exhibitions, and cross-strait exchanges, as well as publish journals. The goal is to help members balance creativity with tradition and combine techniques with theory.

We look at the ornamental observances of society, and understand how the processes of transformation are accomplished all under heaven.” Human expression began with painting and gradually evolved into symbols, forming pictographs that conveyed meaning and helped develop culture. Words have the ability to be passed down and adapted over time; thus, even though oracle bone script is ancient, it remains relevant. This exhibition highlights the artistic side of oracle bone script by bringing ancient wisdom into modern art, creating a unique aesthetic. We welcome everyone to visit and experience the blend of ancient characters and new art.
