演講摘要(Abstract)

This paper will consider the ways in which modernity and postmodernity are figured in the the films of Michelangelo Antonioni and Tsai Ming-liang through of the sounds of wind and rain as forms of environmental noise. Antonioni's work, while rightly celebrated as modernist, nevetheless offers a clear critique of modernity. Examining the psychological and emotional impact of modernity, Antonini's films focus on the alienation and isolation of the individual. The sound of wind is often used in his films to create a sense of disturbance, sonically problematsing the relationship between his protagonists and the world in which they live. While Tsai Ming-liang's films also focus on themes of alienation and isolation, the ever-present sound of rain offers an entirely different model of environmental noise, suggesting an altogether different relationship with the urban environment. The paper will consider these different figurations of environmental noise in relation to the historical and cultural contexts of modernity and postmodernity.

演講摘要(Abstract)

This paper is concerned with the representation of white Europeans and Americans, their tastes and cultural traditions, and the architectural and narrative spaces with which they are associated as key signifiers of modernity in two films by the Taiwanese director Pai Ching-jui. Both 'Lonely Seventeen'(1967) and 'Home Sweet Home' (1969) feature encounters between Taiwanese protagonists and Westerners that serve to problematise Taiwan's engagement with modernity and the West. Thus, in Pai's films, the international spaces of hotels, restaurants and airports, stage cultural encounters in which identities and modernities do not pass seamlessly between one culture and another, but rather become the scene of cultural disturbance: these are the locations in which communication fails, in which identities are threatened, and in which the utopian celebration of modernity is questioned.
