摘要:

The question of public recognition has taken on a central place in the contemporary debate in social philosophy. It involves the  status of various identities (associated with ethnic, sexual, gender, professional, generational particularities, or with handicaps) that are not new but that today demand to be affirmed as fairness requirements (see Ch. Taylor, M. Walzer, A. Honneth, N. Fraser, P. Ricoeur). The central question is that of the public granting of respect and esteem. This question can be the object of a purely deductive approach. But its fundamental character can also be understood by reexamining certain social practices of traditional societies. My  aim in this paper is to revisit Marcel Mauss’ The Gift and to show that ceremonial gift exchange is above all a procedure of public reciprocal recognition between groups; this may enable us to establish a symbolic genesis of the political order beyond the social bond (which also exists in animal societies) and to understand how the question of dignity is at the core of social relationships and institutional formations.
