摘要:
The question of public recognition has taken on a central place in the contemporary debate in social philosophy. It involves the status of various identities (associated with ethnic, sexual, gender, professional, generational particularities, or with handicaps) that are not new but that today demand to be affirmed as fairness requirements (see Ch. Taylor, M. Walzer, A. Honneth, N. Fraser, P. Ricoeur). The central question is that of the public granting of respect and esteem. This question can be the object of a purely deductive approach. But its fundamental character can also be understood by reexamining certain social practices of traditional societies. My aim in this paper is to revisit Marcel Mauss’ The Gift and to show that ceremonial gift exchange is above all a procedure of public reciprocal recognition between groups; this may enable us to establish a symbolic genesis of the political order beyond the social bond (which also exists in animal societies) and to understand how the question of dignity is at the core of social relationships and institutional formations.
Marcel Hénaff, a philosopher and anthropologist, is since 1988 professor at the University of California, San Diego. He has studied Philosophy at the Universities of Lyon and Paris, and ethnology at the University of Abidjan, Ivory Coast. He has taught at the University of Copenhagen, at the Collège International de Philosophie in Paris, at Johns Hopkins University and Kyoto University. His publications include Sade, the invention of the libertine body (University of Minnesota Press, 1999; Orig, French 1978); Claude Lévi-Strauss and the Making of Structural Anthropology (Univ. of Minnesota Press, 1998; orig. French 1991); Public Space and Democracy (coedited with Tracy Strong, Univ. of Minnesota Press, 2001); Le Prix de la vérité. Le don, l’argent, la philosophie, Paris, Le Seuil, 2002 [The Price of Truth. Gift. Money, Philosophy, Stanford U Press 2010 ]; La Ville qui vient [City on the making] Paris, L’Herne, 2008; Le Passeur de sens [The Carrier of Meaning], Perrin, Paris, 2009 ; Le Don des philosophes. Repenser la réciprocité [Philosophers’s Gift. Rehtinking Reciprocity], Paris Le Seuil, 2012. His main field of research is political philosophy and anthropology of political institutions and symbolic practices.
