NCHU Achieves Record-High QS 2025 Subject Rankings: 14 Disciplines Recognized, Significant Cross-Disciplinary Advancements

The UK-based higher education analytics firm QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) released its latest QS World University Rankings by Subject 2025 on March 12. National Chung Hsing University (NCHU) has achieved its best-ever performance, with 14 subjects making the list, ranking seventh among universities in Taiwan. This marks a significant improvement from last year, with four new disciplines included: English Language and Literature, Economics and Econometrics, Business and Management Studies, and Environmental Sciences. Notably, Business and Management Studies and Environmental Sciences made their debut in the rankings, with eight disciplines securing positions within the global top 500, reflecting NCHU’s growing international competitiveness.
In this year’s rankings, NCHU made notable advancements across various fields. In the "Arts and Humanities" category, English Language and Literature ranked 301-350 globally and fifth in Taiwan. In the "Social Sciences and Management" category, Economics and Econometrics, along with Business and Management Studies, were newly ranked. In the "Natural Sciences" category, Environmental Sciences made its first appearance, ranking sixth in Taiwan. Other ranked disciplines include Agriculture and Forestry (151-200 globally, second in Taiwan), Chemical Engineering (251-300 globally, seventh in Taiwan), Mechanical, Aeronautical & Manufacturing Engineering (251-300 globally, sixth in Taiwan), Chemistry (351-400 globally, sixth in Taiwan), Biological Sciences (401-450 globally, seventh in Taiwan), Materials Science (401-550 globally, seventh in Taiwan), as well as Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Physics & Astronomy, Computer Science & Information Systems, and Medicine. These achievements highlight NCHU’s continuous self-improvement, its commitment to expanding academic capabilities, and its growing influence in humanities and social sciences.
NCHU has actively pursued interdisciplinary development, successfully integrating fields such as agricultural and veterinary sciences, science and engineering, as well as humanities and social sciences. The university is dedicated to cultivating high-level talent, fostering academic innovation, expanding international collaborations, and increasing societal engagement. As the only national university in central Taiwan with a medical school, NCHU focuses on training medical professionals with both scientific expertise and humanistic care. Additionally, plans are underway for the establishment of NCHU-affiliated hospitals to support the government’s "Healthy Taiwan Deep-Rooting Project."
The university has also been recognized as the national leader in implementing the Ministry of Education’s interdisciplinary talent cultivation program for precision health industries, successfully translating expertise from agricultural and veterinary sciences to industry applications. NCHU houses Taiwan’s largest smart manufacturing training base on a university campus and has received the highest national funding for AI-driven smart agriculture projects. Partnering with TSMC, NCHU leads the semiconductor talent development program for a consortium of 14 national universities, creating the largest STEM training platform in Taiwan. Furthermore, it established Asia’s first Academy of Circular Economy, securing NT$100 million in funding from Taipower to build the only microgrid system on a central Taiwan university campus, making it a model for net-zero campus transformation.
