The National Chung Hsing University (NCHU) baseball team claimed third place in the 113th University Baseball League (UBL) general division after a 6-4 victory over Minghsin University of Science and Technology. This marks the team’s best performance in 21 years. In the third-place match, NCHU recorded 10 hits and maintained an offensive presence in nearly every inning. Starting pitcher Chih-Yi Chuang, a sophomore in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, held the mound until the bottom of the seventh inning. A crucial two-run hit by team captain Yen-Tsung Lai in the top of the fifth helped extend the lead, demonstrating the team’s strong collaboration en route to victory.
A total of 83 university teams from across the country participated in this year’s tournament, which lasted four months. NCHU head coach Peng-Fei Tu emphasized the difficulty of reaching the semifinals, given that NCHU is not a sports-focused university. To compensate for their physical disadvantage, the team prioritized strength training and both short- and long-distance running throughout the year. These efforts enhanced the players’ endurance, confidence, and stability on the field.
Chih-Yi Chuang delivered a stellar performance, pitching seven innings with a total of 98 pitches, allowing seven hits, and securing the win. In the bottom of the seventh, with the bases loaded and no outs, team captain and junior student in the Department of Life Sciences Yen-Tsung Lai took over on the mound. Facing intense pressure after conceding three consecutive runs, Lai remained composed and struck out three batters in a row to seal the victory.
Chuang has been passionate about baseball since elementary school, but due to attending a private middle school without a baseball team, he only resumed playing in high school. Aware that his pitching velocity was not particularly fast, he developed an arsenal of breaking pitches, primarily relying on curveballs and changeups to disrupt batters' timing. Meanwhile, Lai started playing softball in elementary school but paused his baseball career in middle school, only to rejoin a team in high school. In this game, he contributed a crucial hit that drove in two runs, widening the lead. He also showcased his pitching prowess by striking out three batters in the final inning to secure the win.
