In the 2024 UBA (University Basketball Association) season, the National Chung Hsing University (NCHU) men’s basketball team made its first-ever appearance at Taipei Arena and claimed a historic victory. With a disciplined defensive system and multiple players scoring in double digits, NCHU defeated CTBC Business School 68–57 to win its first UBA championship in school history. Students, faculty, and alumni—both in attendance and watching online—were filled with pride at the team’s resilience and determination.

Under the leadership of Head Coach Chia Fan and Assistant Coach Lin Chih-Cheng, the NCHU squad delivered an airtight defensive performance in the title game. Their zone defense and dominance on the boards stifled CTBC Business School, which had averaged wins by more than 50 points throughout the season. NCHU held the lead from start to finish and never allowed CTBC to find its footing.

Yang Chang-Hung, Tsao Er-Fang, Chen Hsin-Han, and Cheng Chung-Chen all scored in double digits. Yang made a statement early with 9 points and 9 rebounds in the first quarter, finishing the half with 11 points and setting the tone for the team. In the third quarter, Tsao picked up the momentum with back-to-back three-pointers and four steals, sparking a surge for NCHU. With just 1:36 remaining in the fourth, Chen nailed a clutch three-pointer to widen the lead to 65–53, effectively sealing the win. He added another three with 36 seconds left, bringing the score to 68 and prompting a wave of celebration from the crowd.

Coach Chia praised the team’s performance, citing their defensive intensity, teamwork, and physical competitiveness. “Now that we’ve earned our spot in Division I, we know there will be greater challenges ahead. We’ll work even harder and aim for an even stronger showing next year.”

Assistant Coach Lin noted that despite limited training time and a smaller talent pool, the players showed exceptional discipline and initiative. “They often train on their own outside of scheduled practices. Several players not only helped us win the championship but also secured admissions to top graduate programs. With good time management, balancing academics and athletics is absolutely possible.”

Senior Tsao Er-Fang, who was recently accepted into the graduate program at National Taiwan University, played his final game for NCHU and scored 16 points. “In previous years, I used to play more cautiously. But as a senior, I knew I had to step up and take responsibility. I just went out there to enjoy the game and give it everything I had,” he said. “Most of us face heavy academic pressure—probably more than athletes at other schools. Every year, our goal is to fight for a place in Division I. To win this with my teammates is the most unforgettable experience.”
