National Chung Hsing University’s (NCHU) project, Green-Han-Xing River Guardian Lab 2.0, dedicated to promoting the sustainable development of the Green River, Han River, and the NCHU living circle in Taichung City, was honored with the Award for Excellence in the “Local Co-Living” category of the 6th Global Views USR Awards on April 8. The project aims to preserve local cultural and historical memory, foster environmental awareness, create spaces for social practice, promote inclusion for the elderly and people with disabilities, and strengthen community resilience. Secretary-General Chang-Yen Lee, the project’s principal investigator, received the award on behalf of the team.

Launched in 2021, the project envisions a humanistic and aesthetically rich Green-Han-Xing living circle. It began with a memorandum of cooperation between NCHU and the Taichung City Government under the mission of “One University, One River,” focusing on the joint stewardship of the Green River and Han Creek drainage system. Led by Secretary-General and Professor Chang-Yen Lee, the project brings together a cross-disciplinary team including Professor Fei-Fei Cheng from the Graduate Institute of Technology Management (College of Management), Assistant Professor Hsin-Yi Chao from the Program of Digital Humanities and Creative Industries (College of Liberal Arts), Professor Hui-Yun Sung (Director of the Library and Graduate Institute of Library and Information Science), Professor Kun-Hua Hsieh from the Department of Chinese Literature, Associate Professor Chia-Hsing Ho (Chair of the Department of History), and Associate Professor Guo-Zhang Song from the Department of Soil and Water Conservation (College of Agriculture and Natural Resources).

The Green-Han-Xing River Guardian Lab 2.0 centers on five key actions: “Understanding Water, Embracing Water, Protecting Water, Revitalizing Water, and Activating Water.” Faculty and students collaborate to promote ecological sustainability of local rivers, preserve local culture, and build an inclusive, barrier-free community. Anchored at NCHU, the project integrates course instruction with on-site practice, supports faculty development through an innovation-focused teaching community, and empowers students to design river-related activities that cultivate hands-on and problem-solving skills while strengthening community engagement. The team continually evaluates outcomes, enhances curriculum design, and connects diverse resources to collectively build a thriving and sustainable river basin living circle.
