To promote the adoption of circular agriculture among women-led micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the Asia-Pacific region, APEC hosted the "Workshop on Promoting Women-Led MSMEs in Adopting Circular Agriculture" in Hanoi, Vietnam, from April 15 to 16, 2025. The event brought together scholars and experts from various APEC economies to explore challenges and innovative solutions. Professor Tzong-Ru Lee from the Department of Marketing at National Chung Hsing University (NCHU) was invited to serve as both a keynote speaker and panelist in two sessions. His participation provided valuable academic and practical insights from Taiwan, contributing to greater international visibility and regional cooperation.

Professor Lee is currently a professor in the Department of Marketing at NCHU, an advisory board member of the AI Centre for Decision Analytics at the University of Alberta in Canada, a fellow of the International Association for Agricultural Sustainability (IAAS), and editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Agriculture Innovation, Technology and Globalisation (IJAITG). He has long been engaged in research and advocacy in the areas of agricultural marketing, circular economy, and digital transformation.

In his keynote address during the session titled “Overview of Women-Led MSMEs in Adopting Circular Agriculture in the APEC Region,” Professor Lee noted that with the growing importance of sustainability and net-zero goals, agricultural production and rural entrepreneurship in Taiwan and across the Asia-Pacific region are increasingly emphasizing resource reuse and waste-to-value strategies. Drawing on real-world examples from Taiwan’s circular agricultural innovation, he underscored the critical role women play in driving agricultural innovation and local community sustainability. He also shared how cross-sectoral collaboration and digital tools such as AI and data analytics can enhance the competitiveness and resource efficiency of women-led agricultural enterprises.

In the following panel, “Identifying Challenges and Approaches to Promote Women-Led MSMEs in Adopting Circular Agriculture,” Professor Lee further analyzed the institutional and resource-related obstacles women face in agricultural entrepreneurship, including land access difficulties, limited financing channels, and inadequate marketing platforms. He called on APEC economies to implement more systemic support mechanisms for female agricultural entrepreneurs—especially through policy incentives, technical capacity building, and international networking—to create a more inclusive and sustainable agricultural ecosystem.

The workshop brought together officials, business leaders, and academics from Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Korea, Thailand, China, and other economies, focusing on topics such as innovation and R&D, policy tools, talent development, and international collaboration. Professor Lee’s contributions not only showcased Taiwan’s strong capabilities in agricultural circular innovation but also significantly enhanced the international visibility and impact of Taiwan’s academic community in the field of sustainable agriculture.
