"NCHU ARCH" 8th Issue has been officially published in April 2025. This issue centers on "Sustainable Development" as its core theme, showcasing National Chung Hsing University's outstanding contributions and achievements in global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Through four main pillars—"Ascension," "Research," "Collaboration," and "Habitat"—this issue presents NCHU's firm commitment and concrete practices toward a sustainable future. To implement environmental sustainability principles and respond to digital trends, Issue 8 of "NCHU ARCH" has made the special decision to transition to an all-digital format, reducing paper usage and carbon emissions from the printing process, demonstrating NCHU's commitment to environmental sustainability through practical action.
In international university rankings, NCHU placed in the 201-300 range globally and ranked 8th in Taiwan in the Times Higher Education (THE) 2024 University Impact Rankings. The university excelled in five SDGs: SDG 2 "Zero Hunger" (6th in Taiwan), SDG 7 "Affordable and Clean Energy" (4th in Taiwan), SDG 12 "Responsible Consumption and Production" (5th in Taiwan), SDG 15 "Life on Land" (2nd in Taiwan), and SDG 17 "Partnerships for the Goals" (4th in Taiwan), demonstrating NCHU's diverse contributions to sustainable development. In the QS World University Rankings for Sustainability 2024, NCHU ranked 430th globally, 91st in Asia, and 7th in Taiwan, with notable strengths in "Environmental Sustainability" (3rd in Taiwan) and "Knowledge Exchange" (4th in Taiwan).
The "Ascension" unit introduces the innovative measures and significant impact of the Plant Teaching Hospital. Dean Yi-Yuan Chuang and Mr. Chih-En Wu share how the Plant Hospital plays a crucial role in achieving sustainable agriculture and promoting biodiversity.
The "Research" unit presents two representative environmental sustainability highlights. The Global Change Biology Research Center, led by Professor Hsi-Te Shih, Professor Ming-Feng Chuang, and Research Assistant Yu-Hsi Wang, focuses on biodiversity and interdisciplinary research, collaborating with the Natural History Museum to promote environmental education. Equally important is the research on "Blue Carbon" by Professor Hsing-Juh Lin from the Department of Life Sciences, who has been dedicated to studying how carbon storage mechanisms in coastal ecosystems play a key role in mitigating global warming, providing an important scientific basis for climate change solutions. Both research endeavors demonstrate NCHU's profound research capabilities in the field of environmental sustainability.
The "Collaboration" unit showcases NCHU's global responsibility in nurturing future sustainable leaders. The TEEP program, directed by Professor Ming-Chun Lu from the Department of Environmental Engineering, hosts international students from Vietnam, the Philippines, and Lithuania, enhancing their professional knowledge in specialized fields. This program, in conjunction with the EQC International Symposium, fosters global academic exchange and cultivates sustainability-minded talent with international perspectives.
The "Habitat" unit introduces the Zhong Gua River ecological restoration project by Professor Peter Chesson and Professor Chiou-Rong Sheue. Through repurchasing farmland and removing concrete embankments, the project restores the stream to its natural state and supports native flora and fauna, demonstrating their practical actions and contributions to habitat conservation.
Finally, the Art Center showcases works by renowned Taiwanese artists Yen-Nang Yang, Chun-Sheng Wang, and Chun-Ming Huang, interpreting sustainable coexistence between humans and nature through art.
