On April 26, the Department of Post-Baccalaureate Medicine at National Chung Hsing University (NCHU) hosted its second White Coat Ceremony at the International Conference Hall of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources Building. Centered on the theme "Passing the Torch, Embarking on the Medical Journey," the event marked a significant milestone as students officially entered the next stage of their medical education. The ceremony was entirely organized by the students, who dedicated themselves to carefully planning every detail amid their demanding academic and clinical training schedules, aiming to create a meaningful and memorable occasion for themselves and their peers.

During the ceremony, witnessed by family members, friends, and faculty, each student donned a white coat—a symbol of professionalism, responsibility, and dedication to the practice of medicine. NCHU President Fuh-Jyh Jan, former President Fuh-Sheng Shieu, and representatives from four partner teaching hospitals—Taichung Veterans General Hospital, Changhua Christian Hospital, Tungs’ Taichung Metroharbor Hospital, and Show Chwan Healthcare System—joined faculty members to extend their congratulations and blessings to the students.

A highlight of the ceremony was the traditional robing ritual, during which faculty members personally assisted students in putting on their white coats and placing stethoscopes around their necks. This act symbolized the formal transmission of medical knowledge, ethics, and mission. Over the next two years, students will be assigned to the affiliated teaching hospitals, where they will engage in rigorous clinical training, working alongside experienced physicians to hone their skills and deepen their commitment to compassionate patient care.

The Department of Post-Baccalaureate Medicine at NCHU is dedicated to cultivating physicians who combine professional expertise with humanistic values, altruistic service, and scientific literacy. Its educational mission is to nurture doctors who not only possess comprehensive medical knowledge and skills but also demonstrate empathy, effective communication, and a commitment to lifelong learning. Through close collaboration with the four teaching hospitals, students will gain practical clinical experience while strengthening their sense of empathy and social responsibility.

In his address, President Fuh-Jyh Jan remarked, “The white coat is more than just a symbol of your new identity—it embodies the responsibility you bear and the hopes society places in you. As you step into hospital wards and communities, remember that you are not only healers but also carriers of warmth and advocates for hope.”

Following the robing ceremony, all students solemnly recited the Physician’s Oath, pledging to uphold the highest ethical standards and to safeguard life with compassion and integrity. A student representative shared, “Organizing this ceremony was a collective effort that taught us the importance of collaboration and perseverance. From planning the proceedings to inviting distinguished guests, every step was a valuable learning experience. We are especially grateful for the strong support and encouragement from the Dean of the College of Medicine and the Chair of the Department, which enabled us to realize this meaningful event. The moment we put on our white coats today, we reaffirmed our original commitment to the medical profession, a commitment that will guide us through every challenge ahead.”

The ceremony concluded with students expressing their heartfelt gratitude to the faculty, acknowledging the guidance and support they have received. The event, both solemn and inspiring, underscored the students’ sense of mission and aspirations for the future. Moving forward, NCHU will continue to collaborate closely with its partner teaching hospitals to advance holistic medical education, smart healthcare, and precision health initiatives, dedicated to cultivating a new generation of physicians who exemplify both professional excellence and humanistic care. The torch of medicine will continue to burn brightly at NCHU, passed down from one generation to the next.
