Late spring and early summer mark the perfect season to witness the beauty of nature, and the Huisun Experimental Forest Station is now at its peak for firefly viewing. In areas such as Camellia Trail, Pear Garden, Entrance Station, and Lovers’ Lane, two species—Luciola curtithorax and Luciola terminalis—light up the night with their glowing presence, casting a romantic shimmer across the forest. To share this magical natural spectacle, the Experimental Forest Office of National Chung Hsing University is hosting the 2025 “Huisun Firefly Nights”, inviting the public to take an evening forest stroll and experience the enchanting prelude of summer.
This year, four sessions of the “Huisun Firefly Nights” have already taken place to great acclaim. For those who haven’t yet joined, remaining dates are May 2, 3, 9, and 10. Overnight guests can join directly at the forest’s general store without reservation. In addition, visitors staying at off-site lodges or campsites are welcome to join the guided firefly tour by meeting at the Entrance Station—all for just NT$50 per person, making this a truly budget-friendly experience.
In addition to firefly season, the Huisun Experimental Forest Station will also host its annual signature event, the Huisun Wood Culture Festival, on May 17–18 and 24–25. Now in its 18th year since debuting in 2008, this year’s theme is “Together in the Forest”, inviting all to embrace the joy of sustainable living. In a nostalgic move, ticket prices return to a “pocket change” rate from 37 years ago—only NT$50. Admission includes a free native sapling, access to sensory forest experiences, and participation in interactive challenge games, offering an overall experience valued at over NT$500.
During the Wood Culture Festival, the station will host dozens of unique stalls featuring local agricultural and forest products, as well as creative goods. Visitors can also enjoy live meadow music performances, creating a feast for both the eyes and ears. The festival program is packed with engaging activities, such as DIY workshops using locally sourced wood and bamboo, forest therapy sessions, family games, and hands-on experiences like reclaimed wood car projects, eco-bottle making, butterfly observation, and even tree climbing, offering an immersive taste of forest life.
Registration for both major events is now open. Huisun Experimental Forest Station warmly invites everyone across Taiwan to step into the forest during this vibrant seasonal transition and create lasting memories together in nature.
