Dr. Lynn Y.S. Lin, an internationally renowned expert in new product sales forecasting, was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Management by National Chung Hsing University (NCHU) on May 23. The degree was conferred by NCHU President Fuh-Jyh Jan in recognition of Dr. Lin’s groundbreaking achievements in international forecasting models and his long-standing, selfless contributions to nurturing young scholars and students at his alma mater.

Dr. Lin graduated from NCHU’s Department of Agricultural Economics in 1958 and earned his master’s degree from the same department in 1960. He later obtained a second master’s degree from Kansas State University and a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota in the United States. In 1977, Dr. Lin developed BASES, a pre-market forecasting system for new product sales, which has since become a crucial tool for global companies in product development and market prediction. Throughout his career, he held key positions at leading international market forecasting and consulting firms such as AC Nielsen BASES and Burke. He also served as a marketing and research advisor to major multinational corporations including Wei Chuan (Taiwan), Procter & Gamble (USA), Unilever, Walmart, Johnson & Johnson, and Samsung (South Korea). In 2002, he founded Lin Consulting Group in the United States and has served as its president since.

In the 1980s, Dr. Lin was commissioned by the customs authorities of the United Kingdom and France to forecast the first-year operational results of the Channel Tunnel. His accurate predictions earned global recognition, making his model one of the most trusted forecasting tools used by companies worldwide. His model also played a key role in the successful launch of the Sydney Harbour Bridge climb, now a major tourist attraction in Australia.

Beyond his business accomplishments, Dr. Lin has shared his expertise as a visiting professor at several prestigious institutions, including the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley; the Johnson Graduate School of Management at Cornell University; the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania; The Ohio State University; the University of Minnesota; and Columbia Business School.

Born into a humble farming family in rural Pingtung, Dr. Lin overcame hardship through education. He often credits his transformative years at NCHU’s Department of Agricultural Economics as the turning point in his life. In gratitude to his alma mater, Dr. Lin has returned to Taiwan every year since 2008 to offer an English-taught course in forecasting, sharing practical insights and inspiring students to apply their knowledge in real-world contexts.

In addition to teaching, Dr. Lin has generously supported the university’s development. His contributions include funding the Jade Award for outstanding young scholars and establishing scholarships for exceptional Ph.D. students. To date, his donations have exceeded NT$19 million, encouraging promising researchers to pursue academic excellence and nurturing the next generation of talent.
