On May 28, the College of Engineering at National Chung Hsing University (NCHU) held an inauguration ceremony for the School of Material for Energy and Environmental Sustainability at its Nantou campus in Chung Hsing New Village. The event marked the official launch of a new interdisciplinary hub dedicated to teaching and research in energy materials and environmental sustainability. Distinguished guests from industry, government, academia, and research institutes, along with NCHU faculty and students, gathered to witness this historic milestone.

The School of Material for Energy and Environmental Sustainability was established in response to global trends toward net-zero carbon emissions and sustainable development. The school focuses on four major areas: energy storage and batteries, new energy technologies, circular materials, and advanced components. With the growing demand for specialized talent outpacing supply in these fields, the school has developed a curriculum that precisely aligns with market needs, combining core coursework with professional internships to cultivate highly skilled professionals equipped with both technical expertise and innovative thinking in sustainable technologies.

In support of Taiwan’s national goal for net-zero transition by 2050, the school’s development strategy is closely aligned with five key research priorities and twelve critical national strategies. Its mission includes:
1. Serving local industries
2. Developing specialized talent
3. Advancing academic research
4. Enhancing applied technology capacity

The school integrates interdisciplinary faculty across NCHU's energy and materials fields, responding to national policy needs in sectors such as traditional industries, semiconductors, and energy storage and batteries. Through in-depth industry-academia-research collaboration, it provides expert consulting, technical development, and workforce training services.

Emphasizing interdisciplinary integration and flexible course design, the school allows students to select from a wide range of cross-departmental courses, gaining both theoretical knowledge and practical training across multiple fields. In addition, the school actively promotes professional certification programs, industry-academia cooperation, and international academic exchange, further enhancing the effectiveness of its teaching and research. These efforts aim to strengthen the international competitiveness of both central Taiwan and the nation as a whole, while raising NCHU’s global visibility within the higher education community.

NCHU President Fuh-Jyh Jan remarked, “The establishment of the professional school injects new momentum into innovation and research in Nantou. It reflects NCHU’s firm commitment and proactive leadership in the field of sustainable technology, while providing strong talent support for Taiwan’s net-zero transition.”

Looking ahead, the school will continue to integrate resources from NCHU’s College of Science, College of Engineering, and College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, while deepening collaborations with domestic and international industries and research institutions. Through these partnerships, NCHU seeks to build a globally competitive and innovation-driven research platform. The university will also continue fulfilling its social responsibility by working hand in hand with government and industry to create a greener, more sustainable future.
