June 6, 2025 — On Engineer's Day, the Chinese Institute of Engineers honored outstanding professionals in Taiwan's engineering sector. Among this year's distinguished recipients was Professor Su-Chin Chen of the Department of Soil and Water Conservation at National Chung Hsing University (NCHU), who received the prestigious Outstanding Engineering Professor Award.

For nearly three decades, Professor Chen has played a pivotal role in Taiwan's disaster prevention efforts. Following the devastation caused by Typhoon Herb in 1996, he spearheaded the development of debris flow early warning systems, helped establish hundreds of community-based disaster prevention networks, and advised on evacuation protocols that saved lives during Typhoon Nari in 2001—efforts that earned recognition from then-Vice President Annette Lu.

A prolific inventor and researcher, Professor Chen holds over 20 domestic and international patents. His innovations have garnered numerous awards, including the Nuremberg Invention Gold Medal, the National Invention Silver Award, and the National Science Council Patent Transfer Award. His patented adjustable check dam design was adopted by Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation and implemented at Landao Creek in the Huisun Forest—symbolizing Taiwan-Japan collaboration in ecological engineering.

Committed to the motto "localize research, globalize impact," Professor Chen has published more than 200 peer-reviewed papers and led major national research projects. He established the world's only full-scale dam failure experimental site, drawing international researchers annually and cementing Taiwan's role as a hub for disaster resilience research.

In recent years, he has led the national initiative on "Nature-based Solutions for Hillslope Environments," advancing stream habitat restoration and green engineering approaches in response to climate change. His latest accolade follows his 2022 Outstanding Research Award from the Ministry of Science and Technology, reaffirming his leadership in engineering innovation.
