National Chung Hsing University (NCHU) continues to demonstrate its strong commitment to cultivating research talent among undergraduates. In the 2025 cycle of the College Student Research Project sponsored by Taiwan’s National Science and Technology Council (NSTC), NCHU secured approval for 155 student-led research proposals—a record high for the university. For the second year in a row, NCHU ranked third among all national universities, with the number of approved projects doubling in just four years, reflecting the university’s growing momentum in research education.

NSTC’s College Student Research Project is designed to foster future talent across basic sciences, applied sciences, and the humanities and social sciences. Each approved project is awarded a minimum of NT$48,000 in research funding, with an additional NT$20,000 available for materials support based on project needs.
To build a robust research culture at the undergraduate level, NCHU has launched initiatives such as Encouraging Undergraduate Students to Participate in Research Projects and Awarding Faculty Advisors for Guiding NSTC College Student Research Projects. The university also hosts regular workshops focused on grant writing strategies, proposal review criteria, and project execution. These efforts have significantly increased both application and approval rates, with several records surpassed this year.

President Fuh-Jyh Jan emphasized NCHU’s ongoing mission to prepare the next generation of scientific leaders by enhancing students’ problem-solving abilities and research experience. In addition to external funding, the university offers internal financial support for students whose proposals are not selected, enabling them to gain hands-on lab experience early in their academic careers. NCHU continues to refine and expand its incentive programs to further encourage student and faculty participation.

According to NCHU’s Office of Research and Development, overall application volume rose markedly this year. The College of Engineering submitted the highest number of proposals (90), followed by the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (69) and the College of Life Sciences (37). Of NCHU’s ten colleges, nine achieved proposal approval rates above 50%. Across 36 departments that submitted applications, 23 exceeded a 50% success rate, with seven departments achieving a perfect 100%—a testament to the university’s proactive research training strategy.

Looking ahead, NCHU remains committed to encouraging academically motivated undergraduates to pursue research. Through diverse incentive mechanisms, comprehensive support systems, and strategic resource investment, the university will continue to cultivate a thriving research culture and strengthen its foundation for academic excellence.
