National Chung Hsing University (NCHU) continues its strategic expansion in biomedical education and research. Following the establishment of its College of Medicine and Post-Baccalaureate Program in Medicine in 2022, NCHU launched the Graduate Institute of Clinical Medicine and the Graduate Institute of Clinical Nursing in 2024. Together, these institutes lay a robust foundation for integrating education, research, and clinical practice in central Taiwan.

Building on this momentum, NCHU will inaugurate the Graduate Institute of Chinese Medicine and New Drug Development in August 2025. This new institute will harness NCHU’s strengths in biomedical sciences, herbal medicine, and pharmaceutical research to cultivate interdisciplinary talent poised to contribute to new drug discovery and improve healthcare delivery—particularly in rural and aging communities.

Combating Aging and Cancer with AI-Driven Innovation in Chinese Medicine and Drug Research
In response to healthcare challenges posed by an aging population and urban-rural disparities, the new institute will leverage NCHU’s established expertise in life sciences, small-molecule drug development, and traditional Chinese medicine. Through collaborations with clinical experts and regional medical centers—and by utilizing university-affiliated forest lands for herbal research—the institute aims to establish a cutting-edge platform for both traditional and modern pharmaceutical innovation. Artificial intelligence (AI) will play a pivotal role in accelerating the drug discovery pipeline, including target identification, indication discovery, and drug repurposing. AI-assisted research will be supported by validation in cellular and animal disease models, helping to overcome traditional bottlenecks in pharmaceutical R&D.

Five Core Research Areas
1. Diagnostic technologies for infectious diseases and the development of innovative Chinese medicines
2. Therapeutics for aging-related diseases
3. Design and synthesis of precision anti-cancer small molecules
4. Integrated applications of bioinformatics and drug development
5. Advanced R&D in the Chinese medicine industry and cross-disciplinary talent cultivation

The institute is committed to developing cost-effective, clinically applicable therapeutic strategies that address the needs of rural healthcare systems, support the upgrading of Taiwan’s biomedical industry, and drive health technology innovation—enhancing both national healthcare resilience and global competitiveness.

Top 1% Worldwide in Clinical Medicine Citations – Collaborating with Leading Hospitals in Central Taiwan
NCHU’s College of Medicine has established close academic collaborations with major regional healthcare institutions, including Changhua Christian Hospital, Taichung Veterans General Hospital, Jen-Ai Hospital, Show Chwan Healthcare System, and Kuang Tien General Hospital. These partnerships support both education and research while facilitating clinical translation.

According to the Essential Science Indicators (ESI), NCHU’s publications in clinical medicine now rank in the top 1% worldwide in citation frequency, demonstrating the university’s growing international impact. The establishment of the College of Medicine further strengthens the integration of basic and clinical sciences, aligns with national healthcare policies, and fosters the training of medical professionals who combine technical expertise with humanistic values—ushering in a new era of smart, technology-driven healthcare in central Taiwan.

Fostering Holistic Medical Education and Regional Integration
NCHU has launched several long-term collaborative programs—including Rong-Hsing, Hsing-Chi, Hsing-Chung, and Hsing-Guo—in partnership with Taichung Veterans General Hospital, Changhua Christian Hospital, Chung Shan Medical University Hospital, and Tri-Service General Hospital Taichung Branch. These initiatives have yielded meaningful research outcomes and strengthened academic-medical integration. The university has also expanded its partnerships to include Ren-Ai Hospital (Dali), Nantou Hospital, Caotun Psychiatric Center, and Yuanlin Christian Hospital, among others. Looking ahead, NCHU will pursue deeper collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Welfare hospitals and additional regional institutions. It also plans to establish more departments and institutes to promote coordinated development across three pillars: medical research, clinical training, and community service. Through these efforts, NCHU remains committed to cultivating healthcare professionals and researchers who embody holistic health values, interdisciplinary thinking, and a deep commitment to improving public health across Taiwan.
