The National University System of Taiwan (NUST), initiated by National Chung Hsing University (NCHU) in 2021 with 11 founding universities, has officially expanded to include four new members—National Quemoy University, University of Taipei, National Dong Hwa University, and National Ilan University. With the Ministry of Education’s approval on August 21, the system now comprises 15 universities, encompassing nearly 120,000 students and 5,000 faculty members, making it the largest higher education alliance in Taiwan.
Over the past four years, NUST has been committed to resource integration, academic collaboration, course sharing, and talent exchange among its member schools. The system operates seven specialized working groups in the areas of teaching, research and development, international affairs, finance, library services, university social responsibility (USR) and regional revitalization, and sports, facilitating deep and ongoing cooperation.
Expanding Opportunities for Students
Since 2022, NUST has offered cross-campus course enrollment for undergraduate students, later expanding in the 2023 academic year to include double majors, minors, and student exchange programs. Students can take up to two cross-campus courses per semester without paying additional credit fees, with 717 enrollments recorded to date. The system also enables research lab exchanges to enhance students’ research skills.
In addition, NUST has co-hosted over 100 celebrity lectures, attracting participation from nearly 80,000 students and faculty members. To better integrate international students into the local culture, NUST organizes activities such as cultural tours, mountain climbing, and river tracing. It also runs programs to support employment opportunities in Taiwan for foreign graduates, including corporate visits, career seminars, and Mandarin learning courses, to boost international students’ willingness to stay in Taiwan after graduation.
Driving Research and Social Responsibility
To nurture young scholars, NUST provides interdisciplinary research grants that encourage cross-campus collaboration and foster research momentum. The system also actively advances university social responsibility (USR) and regional revitalization initiatives, hosting forums and cooperative projects.
In the area of ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) talent development, NUST member schools have launched over 82 ESG-related courses, covering topics such as environmental stewardship, social responsibility, and sustainable management. Spanning 11 counties and cities, NUST has also built strong partnerships with leading enterprises, creating a broad industry-government-academia-research ESG network that strengthens the foundation for sustainable development in Taiwan.
Leadership Vision
Fuh-Jyh Jan, President of NCHU and Chair of NUST, expressed his warm welcome to the four new member universities, noting that their inclusion will broaden the system’s geographic reach and interdisciplinary collaboration, while enhancing overall competitiveness. “This expansion represents not only closer regional connections but also a significant milestone in Taiwan’s journey toward greater collaboration and resource sharing in higher education,” he said.
