The National Chung Hsing University (NCHU) Organic Farmers’ Market celebrated its 18th anniversary on the morning of September 13, featuring a special outdoor birthday concert by Huei-Ming School for Blind Children and the Good Men Band. The celebration also brought together 60 certified organic farms from across Taiwan, offering activities such as prize drawings for purchases and awards for farmers, creating a grand joint exhibition and sale.

Established in September 2007 by Professor Shih-Jui Tung of NCHU’s Graduate Institute of Bio-Industry Management. Currently, around 40 certified organic farms participate regularly in the NCHU Organic Farmers’ Market. Together they cover more than 300 hectares of certified farmland, making it the largest organic farmers’ market in Taiwan.

The anniversary celebration was attended by NCHU President Fuh-Jyh Jan, former Vice President Jenn-Wen Huang, Dean of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources Chih-Feng Chen, market founder Professor Shih-Jui Tung, Professor Shu-Jen Tuan of the Organic Agriculture Promotion Center, and Central Taiwan Branch Director Shang-Jen Chen of the Agriculture and Food Agency.

In his remarks, President Fuh-Jyh Jan noted that the NCHU Organic Farmers’ Market is both the earliest established and the largest of its kind in Taiwan. Sustaining operations on campus for 18 years has not been easy. In its early days, the market faced challenges such as irregular supply and fluctuating attendance, which made development difficult. Thanks to the perseverance of founder Professor Shih-Jui Tung, former Vice President Jenn-Wen Huang, and many dedicated teams, the market gradually matured. Jan emphasized that as an agricultural university, NCHU has always been closely tied to farming, and the market not only spreads the organic philosophy to the community but also complements the university’s development. He expressed his hope that the market will continue to thrive as a national model for promoting organic agriculture.

The anniversary series of events included the outdoor concert, prize drawings for shoppers, the joint farmers’ showcase, and a farmers’ market workshop. Consumers who spent above a certain amount were eligible to join the lottery, which featured 250 market vouchers and other gifts. The market also invited 60 partner markets from across Taiwan—including NIU farmers’ market in Yilan, Tri-Small Market in Yunlin, Breeze Market in Kaohsiung, and Taitung Market—to join the celebration. In addition, representatives from various farmers’ markets nationwide gathered to exchange experiences and explore opportunities for future collaboration.

Over the past 18 years, the NCHU Organic Farmers’ Market has not only fulfilled the university’s social responsibility but has also set a benchmark for the operation of farmers’ markets. Beyond providing high-quality, fresh organic produce to local residents and the university community while boosting farmers’ incomes, the market has also integrated with general education courses and international exchange activities, enabling students to gain hands-on understanding of organic agriculture.
