The 2025 Taiwan Innovation Technology Expo held its awards ceremony on October 18. Organized by the Intellectual Property Office of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, this year's “Invention Competition Zone” attracted nearly a thousand entries. Delegations from South Korea, Indonesia, Thailand, and other countries participated, demonstrating the invention community's high regard for the Platinum Award and the intense competition for it. National Chung Hsing University achieved outstanding results, securing 1 Platinum, 2 Gold, 2 Silver, and 3 Bronze awards. Research fields spanned agricultural biotechnology, smart sensing, biomedical testing, and materials chemistry. Multiple enterprises actively pursued technology transfer and industry-academia collaboration.

Platinum Award-Winning Technologies:
1.Prof. En-Pei Chiang: Our team developed a non-invasive GC-CI/MS platform to simultaneously quantify and trace fatty acid carbon fluxes in vivo, with applications in food safety, functional nutrition, clinical drug metabolism, and product development. The platform enabled the creation of fat-reducing and muscle-enhancing molecules and probiotic formulations, successfully transferred to Song-Yong Biotech and Chang-Ying Biotech. Joint products CM1 and LBP won the Tokyo Genius Invention Award. The technology has received multiple honors, including the National Innovation Award, Asia Microbiome Forum Championship, and Functional Ingredient Development Award, highlighting its broad impact and industrial value.

Gold Award-Winning Technologies:
1. Prof. Yu-Tang Tong & Prof. Jyh-Horng Wu : Professor Yu-Tang Tung of National Chung Hsing University and Distinguished Professor Jyh-Horng Wu, in collaboration with Dr. Chun-Liang Tung’s team at Chiayi Christian Hospital, have developed a patented extraction technology using black soybeans that successfully preserves anthocyanins and isoflavones while enhancing GABA content. Animal studies have shown that the extract regulates gut microbiota and brain gene expression, improving anxiety and emotional imbalance caused by sleep deprivation. The technology is safe and market-ready, with nine patents granted, demonstrating applications in functional foods and health products, and paving the way for innovation in the smart health industry.

2. Prof. Jing-Chou Wu: Professor Ching-Chou Wu of National Chung Hsing University has developed a patented Self-Calibrating Sensing Device, a next-generation water quality probe with integrated microchannels and sensing chips. The device features automatic self-cleaning and calibration, requiring only 0.5 mL of calibration solution, thereby significantly reducing maintenance needs. Unlike conventional probes that are easily contaminated and require frequent on-site servicing, this innovation ensures stable and accurate long-term monitoring. With applications in aquaculture, reservoirs, rivers, and bioreactors, the technology offers a reliable solution for managing outdoor water quality and supports sustainable environmental monitoring.

Silver Award-Winning Technologies:
1. Prof. En-Pei Isabel Chiang: in collaboration with Prof. Jason Huang’s Lab at NCHU, our team developed a novel approach for producing recombinant carbon-fixing microbes using a minimal number of foreign genes. Through a mass spectrometry–based pathway optimization platform of the reverse TCA cycle, we successfully engineered E. coli capable of CO₂ assimilation and carbon flux regulation. This invention, which received the 2024 Green Ideas International Invention & Design Competition Titanium Award, demonstrates the potential to achieve efficient carbon fixation and organic compound biosynthesis using only a single heterologous gene.

2. Prof. Chang-Wei Hsieh: This technology utilizes plasma modification and biopolymers to improve commercial plastic films, enhancing their CO2 selectivity for use in modified atmosphere packaging for fruits and vegetables. This technology regulates the continuous accumulation of CO2 within the packaging and establishes a preservation module adaptable to various agricultural products. Taking button mushrooms (Agaricus bisporus) as an example, this technology can extend their shelf life from 7 to 21 days.

Bronze Award-Winning Technology:
1. Prof. Kuen-Lin Chen: The “Method and Kit for Detecting miR-135a-5p” is an innovative molecular diagnostic platform that integrates magneto-plasmonic nanoparticles with the magneto-optical Faraday effect. This technology enables rapid and highly precise detection of the Alzheimer’s disease biomarker miR-135a-5p in blood samples at attomolar (aM) concentrations, without the need for nucleic acid amplification or fluorescence labeling. With its simplicity, exceptional sensitivity, and strong clinical translatability, this breakthrough technology represents a new-generation solution for early Alzheimer’s disease risk screening and intelligent precision healthcare.

2. Prof. Chih-Feng Huang: The invention discloses a method for synthesizing a crosslinker with an α-inducing group, comprising esterification, atom transfer radical addition, and deprotection. A bromine group is introduced at the α-position to lower activation energy, enabling the preparation of thermosetting resins without a catalyst.

3. Prof. Hsiao-Wei Wen: This invention establishes a dual real-time quantitative PCR technology that enables highly sensitive and specific simultaneous detection of mango and kiwifruit DNA in a single reaction. It rapidly identifies allergen residues and detects adulteration where low-value ingredients replace high-value fruits, thereby enhancing food labeling supervision and safety management.
