An opening ceremony for "Health and Wellness Campus Community" was held in the morning of May 4 at National Chung Hsing University. This new program combines services of the Office of Student Affairs, Office of Physical Education and Sport, Computer and Information Center, Office of General Affairs, Personnel Department, Secretariat Office, and Research Center for Humanities and Social Sciences, and features six schemes, to be promoted in the next three years. They include: a three-mile trail encircling the campus, a sports park, the creation of healthy menus, mini concerts, a graffiti space devoted to impromptu art, and a wireless sensor network covering the entire campus to transform NCHU into a healthy campus community, while offering the faculty, the students and NCHU neighbors quality services.
Dr. Fuh-Sheng Shieu, the university president, noted that NCHU is known in Taiwan for its organic farming practices, which has been in place for ten years. It also pioneers in the promotion of an organic campus. The program is now further enriched with sports, dietary choices, music, art and information technologies that incorporate the different expertise of the students and the faculty, to transform NCHU into a health-conscious campus community. A better space and facilities for physical activities will be built on campus, allowing the faculty and students to access a wealth of information on fitness and nutrition. There will also be concerts and art activities to keep the faculty, the students, and members of the general public healthy and inspired.
The Office of Student Affairs also hosted an Open House to help students and faculty understanding the services available, which include a physical exam, a mental health assessment, and a sobering experience of the world of those with hearing impairment. The Office representative noted that families, interpersonal relationship, and relationship with the opposite sex are the three biggest relational dilemmas confronting college students. During "Navigating the Treacherous Waters of Relationships," students were encouraged to voice their thoughts through tabletop games and card games, so that they would be more open-minded about seeking counseling in times when professional assistance is necessary.
