NCHU Gallery of University History officially launched its new special exhibition, “Who Is Talking? Storytelling Stones & Campus Artworks,” on December 22. On the opening day, the exhibition attracted a large number of faculty members, students, and members of the public, creating a lively and engaging atmosphere.
The opening ceremony was attended by Dean Cheng-Hsien Wu of the College of Liberal Arts, Deputy Library Director Yao-Chung Fan, and Professor Kai-Yu Tang, Director of the Graduate Institute of Library and Information Studies. Together, they marked the opening of the exhibition and expressed their recognition of the graduate student curatorial team’s innovative approach to reinterpreting campus cultural heritage. Visitors followed exhibition maps to complete interactive tasks, read the stories behind each exhibit, operate interactive devices, and participate in games, gradually discovering the often-overlooked stone tablets, sculptures, and animal-themed artworks scattered throughout the campus.
This exhibition was curated by graduate students enrolled in the course “Cultural Architecture and Spatial Curating, 2025 Fall Semester,” offered by the Graduate Institute of Library and Information Studies, under the guidance of Associate Professor Hsin-Yi Chao, and executed by the University Archives Division of the NCHU Library. It marks the first University Archives exhibition jointly curated by graduate students at NCHU. Integrating academic research, digital technology, and curatorial practice, the exhibition employs humor, wordplay, and personified storytelling to help audiences connect with the history, culture, and emotional memories embedded in campus spaces, showcasing the University Archives’ diverse efforts in revitalizing cultural assets and advancing experiential learning.exhibition
Layout: Five Themed Zones
Zone A – Welcome! Come explore with us!
Introduces the curatorial concept and interactive games in a friendly and accessible manner, outlining the exhibition’s core ideas and overall participation tasks.
Zone B – Speaking Stone Stories
Twelve featured exhibits appear to whisper their stories. Each has its own personality, temperament, and hidden secrets, waiting for visitors to pause and hear them say, “Well, actually…”
Zone C – Who Am I, Stone?
Through tablet-based interactions, visitors read clues and hints. Some stones remain mysterious, while others are talkative, turning the experience into a playful guessing game: “Do you want to know my secret?”
Zone D – Legends of the Stone Realm
Explores deeper narratives behind the stones, including lost histories, overlooked details, hidden codes left by creators, or the journeys of the stones themselves. Each exhibit represents a small universe of stories.
Zone E – Stone Realm Interactive
Invites visitors to engage hands-on—using their minds, bodies, and intuition—to experience the vitality of the artworks. There are no standard answers, only increasingly joyful participation.
To help visitors connect more closely with these “silent witnesses,” the exhibition incorporates 3D models, 3D scanning, interactive Q&A stations, and in-depth storytelling zones, complemented by a map-based mission and a stamp-collecting challenge. Visitors are encouraged to locate 12 designated targets according to the exhibition map and complete the full set of stamps. After completing the challenge, participants are invited to share their experiences on Facebook and Instagram. The map can also be taken off-site as an extended campus guide, encouraging visitors to revisit the actual stone monuments and listen to their stories whispered in the wind.
Creative Photo Challenge
In conjunction with the exhibition, the University Archives has launched the “Creative Photo Challenge,” inviting NCHU faculty and students to visit the exhibition, select the exhibit that resonates with them the most, and capture a creative photo together.
