Flourishing Blossoms in Ink: A Calligraphy Art Exhibition by Huang Kuo-Shu

At the beginning of the new semester, as the warm breezes of spring arrive and variety of flowers blossom, the Art Center of National Chung Hsing University presents its first exhibition of 2026, featuring Taiwanese calligraphy artist and the Outstanding Alumnus of NCHU, Huang Kuo-shu from February 26th to March 27th. The exhibition showcases more than 70 pieces of modern calligraphy works created by Huang, dedicated to expressing the beauty and pleasure of life. Drawing on celebrated lines and passages from classical and contemporary poetry, prose, folk songs, and aphorisms, the artist arranges writing scripts and unique composition with delicate ink imagery and floral patterns in his calligraphy works. By breaking beyond the conventional forms and stylistic frameworks of traditional calligraphy, the artworks incorporate elements of contemporary visual art. Through the interplay of textual composition and shifting colors, the pieces create a distinctive visual aesthetic that create a vibrant and joyful chapter.

Born in 1964 in Lugu Township, Nantou County, Huang Kuo-Shu graduated from Taichung Municipal Taichung First Senior High School, Taipei National University of the Arts, and earn the master degree from Graduate Institute of International Politics at National Chung Hsing University. He currently serves as vice chairman of the NCHU Alumni Association and president of the Rotary Club of Taichung Situen. In public service, he was voted to be five terms as a Member of Council of Taichung City Government and three terms as a Member of the Legislative Yuan. He was also recognized eight times as an outstanding legislator by the Citizen Congress Watch for his performance on the education and culture filed, reflecting his remarkable record in public affairs. In addition to Huang's political achievements, he has demonstrated brilliant creation in the arts. Encouraged by family guidance from an early age, he revealed notable artistic talent in literature and calligraphy. During his academic years, his calligraphy works received numerous awards, inspiring him to pursue the path of calligraphic art. Furthermore, under the mentorship of prominent contemporary masters at Taipei National University of the Arts, broadening both his artistic vision and technical mastery. Even during his political career, he continued to practice calligraphy diligently. Over the years, he has been invited to hold solo exhibitions at Taichung City Dadun Cultural Center, Legislative Yuan, National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, National United University, National Chung Hsing University, National Library of Public Information, and Taichung Veterans General Hospital etc..

Timed with the arrival of spring, alumnus Huang Kuo-Shu has titled his exhibition "Flourishing Blossoms in Ink," inspired by the classic verse from Zhu Xi’s poetry: "Discerning the face of the East Wind with ease, a myriad of reds and purples ever signify spring." The exhibition celebrates the rebirth and vibrant beauty of the season. Huang translates classical poetry and folk songs into vivid textual and colorful imagery, showcasing remarkable vitality and artistic depth. His work seeks to offer warmth and hope to the public, while also capturing the festive spirit of the Lunar New Year by incorporating traditional Taiwanese blessings. This exhibition is a pursuit of aesthetic perfection and poetic expression. Through this diverse array of heartfelt masterpieces, visitors are invited to immerse themselves in a world of splendor that purifies the mind and uplifts the soul.

The success of the works, in both form and content, is rooted in a profound mastery of calligraphy. Huang specializes in various script styles, a skill developed through his disciplined study of classical steles and rubbings. By exploring diverse expressive possibilities, he elevates calligraphy from a mere literary vehicle to a powerful form of visual art. His brushwork reflects a distinct humanistic character and a deep-seated care for local history. Much like the literati of old who used poems of blossoming landscapes to express their aspirations, Huang captures the spirit of renewal and nature’s vitality. His works are both a celebration of life and a source of inspiration.
