The 7th Global Views University Social Responsibility (USR) Awards held its award ceremony on April 9, where National Chung Hsing University (NCHU) received four major honors—marking its best performance to date. The awards include two Model Awards in the “Sustainability Report” and “Sustainability Curriculum” categories, as well as two Excellence Awards in the “Local Co-Prosperity” and “Ecological Co-Benefit” categories, demonstrating the university’s outstanding achievements in sustainability and USR implementation.

NCHU President Fuh-Jyh Jan noted that the university has long been committed to advancing sustainable development. In addition to participating in the Sustainability Report category this year, NCHU also encouraged its USR project teams to compete, successfully showcasing years of accumulated achievements across the university. Winning four awards at once not only highlights NCHU’s strong execution capabilities, but also serves as great encouragement for faculty, students, and project teams. Moving forward, NCHU will continue leveraging its robust R&D capacity and professional expertise to protect ecosystems and promote local sustainable development.

Model Award (Sustainability Curriculum)
“Stray LOHAS”: Stray Animals Reduction and Fulfilment of Welfare Project

This project addresses the shortage of professionals in stray animal medical care and the low welfare standards in shelters by offering a structured curriculum tailored to different learning levels.

The general education course “Animal Welfare” introduces students to real-world shelter environments and incorporates deliberative democracy discussions to engage with social issues surrounding stray animals. The veterinary elective “Free Veterinary Clinic for Companion Animals” provides hands-on training in basic clinical skills, allowing students to understand shelter animal conditions and the responsibilities of public veterinarians.

At the graduate level, courses such as “Clinical Medicine and Medical Care for Stray Animals” and “Practical Training in Animal Healthcare” follow U.S. shelter medicine standards, training students in sterilization procedures within campus facilities and extending these services to rural areas.

Through a progressive curriculum design, the project extends animal welfare education beyond campus into society, cultivating students’ sense of responsibility and equipping them with both clinical expertise and public awareness—thereby forming a positive cycle linking education, professional training, and social impact.

Excellence Award (Local Co-Prosperity)
“Twin Pulses of Green and Dry: United in Water Stewardship” – Two-River Basin Guardian Laboratory

This project focuses on the two major rivers surrounding the NCHU campus—the Green River and Han Stream—as its field of practice. Led by Professor Li Chang-Yen, Secretary-General of NCHU, the project brings together an interdisciplinary team spanning management, humanities, information science, agriculture, and engineering.

The initiative addresses complex issues such as river governance, ecological education, and social inclusion—challenges that cannot be solved by a single discipline alone. One key effort involves integrating river science education into nearby elementary school curricula, fostering early talent development.

The project has also developed multi-sensory teaching materials and trained visually impaired individuals as non-visual tour guides, creating an exemplary model of inclusive education. By using rivers as a shared platform, the project strengthens connections between the university and surrounding communities, jointly promoting sustainable development in the local living environment.
Excellence Award (Ecological Co-Benefit)

Environmental Resilience and Sustainability—Ecological Restoration for One Health in Forest, River, and Village
Centered on the restoration area of Zhonggua Creek in Guoxing Township, Nantou County, this project originated from Taiwan’s first community-driven stream restoration initiative. It aims to build upon prior restoration achievements by monitoring ecosystem changes following the removal of concrete barriers, while cultivating talent in ecological restoration.

The project also supports rural education, facilitates access to basic water infrastructure, and promotes the values of resilience and sustainability through activities and forums. Through collaboration between the public and private sectors, it works to improve habitats, restore native species, and recover ecosystem functions—ultimately achieving the goal of integrated health across forests, rivers, and communities.

Since restoration began, the proportion of tilapia has dropped from 70% to zero, while biodiversity has steadily increased—demonstrating the value of “river rewilding” and the resilience of ecosystems. With over 1,500 annual visitors and growing corporate participation, the project continues to showcase the vitality of ecological restoration, aiming to inspire further efforts and bring renewed hope to Taiwan’s rivers.
