A delegation led by Prof. Ova Emilia, Rector of Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), one of National Chung Hsing University’s (NCHU) partner universities and widely recognized as Indonesia’s “Public Ivy,” visited NCHU on May 6, 2026, accompanied by representatives from Taiwan’s Ministry of Education. The delegation included the Vice Rector for Research, Business Development and Partnership, the Director of Partnership & Global Relations, and the deans of the Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, and Vocational School.
The visit not only highlighted the strong partnership between the two universities, but also marked a new milestone in expanding collaboration to comprehensive cross-disciplinary cooperation at the institutional level.
Recognized as Indonesia’s largest and most prestigious public university, UGM has an outstanding international reputation in agriculture, engineering and technology, environmental sustainability, and public policy. During the meeting, NCHU President Fuh-Jyh Jan noted that NCHU actively supports Taiwan’s New Southbound Policy promoted by the Ministry of Education, which emphasizes “people-centered and two-way exchanges.” He described UGM as one of NCHU’s most important strategic partners in Southeast Asia.
President Jan further emphasized that NCHU’s development strategies focus on “integrating interdisciplinary research strengths” and “cultivating globally competitive talent”. Building upon the collaboration in agriculture and life sciences, both universities now aim to extend cooperation into engineering, science, and electrical engineering and computer science, with the goal of establishing a globally influential academic partnership platform.
Academic exchanges between the two institutions originally began in the fields of agriculture and life sciences and later expanded into the humanities and social sciences. During the visit, Senior Vice President for International Affairs, Dr. Chi-Chung Chou introduced NCHU’s internationalization initiatives and global academic resources. Dean of the College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Dr. Ching-Chih Tsai, Dean of the College of Science, Dr. Chia-Chien Huang and Associate Dean of the College of Engineering, Dr. Jhy-Cherng Tsai also presented their colleges’ major research achievements and development highlights.
The UGM delegation expressed strong interest in NCHU’s accomplishments in semiconductor research, smart manufacturing, and environmental sustainability. Both sides engaged in in-depth discussions on dual-degree programs, student exchange programs, and future collaborative opportunities. The two universities also expressed hopes of transforming their existing single-college collaborations into a more integrated “one university–multiple colleges” partnership model, while exploring future cooperation opportunities in NCHU’s emerging medical school.
Rector Ova Emilia remarked that NCHU holds a leading position in Taiwan’s higher education sector. Through this visit, UGM hopes to create broader opportunities for comprehensive collaboration. She also stated that UGM will continue encouraging outstanding Indonesian students to pursue studies at NCHU and warmly welcomes NCHU faculty members and students to visit UGM, further strengthening bilateral academic and industry-academia connections.
In closing, President Jan reaffirmed NCHU’s commitment to advancing internationalization through substantive partnerships with leading universities in New Southbound countries. NCHU aims to nurture students with global perspectives and practical problem-solving abilities, while continuing to contribute to the international academic community and global sustainable development.
