The “steelChallenge-13” hosted by the worldsteel association held its finals in Madrid, Spain on April 16, 2019. Shao-Wei Lou(樓紹緯), a graduate student at the Department of Materials of National Chung Hsing University (NCHU), defeated 1904 participants from 50 countries and won the world championship in the student category. Yu-En Chang(張育恩), currently a doctoral student at the Department of Materials Department of NCHU, came in second in the students category. It is the first time that NCHU students have ever achieved such good results in any international competitions and both the gold and silver medals in the “steelChallenge-13” has made history.

“steelChallenge-13” is an annual event for welding practitioners and students in related fields. Jia-Jun Lee(李佳峻), a doctoral student whose advisors are Professor Wei-Te Wu(吳威德)and Chi-Ming Lin(林啟明), assistant researcher at department of materials, NCHU, won the world championship in 2017. This year’s champions in fact are both from the same lab and it only proves that Taiwan’s welding fabrication skills should not be overlooked. At the same time, this has also set an unprecedented record for this competition, as NCHU is the only university to win two student championships. The award-winning students said that winning this award is the most outstanding achievement being a welding expert.

The World Steel Association held the pre-match of the Steelmaking Challenge in November, 2018, involving 1905 international steelmaking talents from 50 countries. After 24 hours of fierce competition, the winners of the four regions of Asia-Pacific, North and South America, China, and Europe and the world's best competitors in the four regions were selected, and a total of five people participated in the finals. In the preliminaries, Yu-En Chang(張育恩)and Shao-Wei Lou(樓紹緯) advanced to the finals with the best results in Asia Pacific region and in the world category consecutively.

In the finals, within the two hours’ time frame, participants should produce the most appropriate chemical formula of steel according to the steel varieties and requirements set by the organizers, including composition ratio of carbon (C), bismuth (Si), manganese (Mn), molybdenum (Mo), vanadium (V), chromium (Cr), aluminum (Al), sulfur (S), oxygen blowing, heat preservation, electricity and other process conditions, that can be used to produce the specified welding result at a minimum cost, the lower cost the better evaluation result. Eventually, only three out of five entrants accomplished the task. Shao-Wei Lou(樓紹緯)won the student category championship at a cost of US$368.62 per ton. The second place was Yu-En Chang(張育恩)at US$368.64, and the third Brazilian player was US$374.84. The third place was achieved. The difference between the runner and the runner-up is about US$6.2. This gap shows that Taiwanese competitors have better technical ideas and operational methods than those of other countries.
