At the end of August 2020, the President of the Czech Senate, Miloš Vystrčil, led a delegation of 89 participants to visit Taiwan, including representatives of our school’s Czech sister school. Through this rare opportunity to visit Taiwan, the President of National Chung Hsing University, Professor Fuh-Sheng Shieu, and Professor Chia-Lin Chang, Vice-President, Office of International Affairs, led teachers of the university to meet with the President of our sister school, the University of Chemistry and Technology, Prague (UCT Prague), Professor Pavel Matějka, and the Director of Science and Technology Division, Czech Economic and Cultural Office, Professor Marie Leflerova, on September 4, 2020. President Matějka is a physical chemist and has a deep interest in international cooperation. In addition to discussing the original cooperation methods, the two parties also planned to hold webminars in the future to reduce the impact of the pandemic, and continue to maintain and expand bilateral exchanges with each other.

National Chung Hsing University currently has five sister schools in the Czech Republic. It is worth mentioning that UCT Prague is the largest chemistry university in the country, which was established in 1952 and is a leading chemical research university in Central Europe. Since 2011, our school has exchanged a memorandum of understanding with them, inviting students from the school to participate in the summer camp held by the College of Engineering. From 2011 to 2015, graduate students of the Department of Chemical Engineering have also visited the school for research and exchanges. The two sides have been cooperating closely.

In the afternoon, President Shieu also met with President Zdeněk Havlas, Vice-President, Czech Academy of Sciences, and Professor Hana Sychrová, Chair, Council for International Affairs, to discuss future directions of cooperation and agreed to sign a memorandum of understanding.

The Czech Academy of Sciences is a prestigious academic institution in the Czech Republic, combining 54 public research institutions in 1992. It has interacted with Academia Sinica in Taiwan since 2017. The meeting of the delegation of National Chung Hsing University, led by President Shie, as well as Vice-President Zdeněk Havlas and Chair Hana Sychrová, was of great significance, which also shows that the collaboration between the two institutions is built on a very strong foundation.

Affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, the actual activities of international exchange have dramatically decreased this year. It is a precious opportunity for us and for the president of UCT Prague to visit Taiwan through a special diplomatic delegation. Apart from President Fuh-Sheng Shieu and Vice-President, Office of International Affairs, Chia-Lin Chang, the representatives of National Chung Hsing University also included Professor Sy-Sang Liaw, Department of Physics (former Director of Science and Technology Division, Taipei Economic and Cultural Office, Prague), Director Ching-Hsuan Lin and Professor Shing-Yi Suen from the Department of Chemical Engineering, Division Chief Chih-Feng Huang from i-Center for Advanced Science and Technology, and Professor Chia-Che Chang from the Institute of Biomedical Sciences. Special thanks to Dr. Hong-wei Yen, Director of Science and Technology Division in the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office, Prague, and personnel in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, for assisting the itinerary of this meeting. Director Yen hopes this interaction between Taiwan and the Czech Republic will create significant future opportunities for collaboration.
