The College of Veterinary Medicine, National Chung Hsing University is unrivaled in Taiwan to introduce a set of teaching aids of real-scale dairy cow simulation from Canada. It contains the simulation of the pregnant dairy cow giving birth to the calf that can simulate the various dystocia postures and birth canal palpation. The students can simulate and practice the related midwifery in the classroom, increase the relevant drill experience to facilitate the future implementation of the clinical medical business in the workplace. It helps the cultivation of the domestic medical personnel for the large animals.
This set of teaching aids contains three simulation systems, including: (1) Cow dystocia simulation system: A calf can be placed in the cow's uterus, and the dystocia position can be simulated at will, so that the students can practice at any time to improve the midwifery when the cow is difficult to give birth. (2) Cow rectal examination simulation system: The normal uterine ovaries or the pregnant uterus at 45, 60, 90 days of pregnancy can be placed in the pelvic cavity, allowing the students to practice the finger touch to find the related organs. We can reduce the long-term practice of the beginners in the cow rectum, which will cause discomfort to the animal, and even avoid the possible danger of death of the animal with the rectal rupture. (3) Cow udder simulation system: It allows the students to learn the correct way of milking and be familiar with the diagnosis and treatment of the common mastitis in the milk production.
Peng-Wen Chen stated that the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) standardizes Day ONE competences as the goal of today's veterinary clinical education. The students need to actually and continuously carry out the clinical technical training. However, based on the animal welfare and humane considerations, the beginners should try hard to avoid using the actual animals to practice the diagnosis and treatment techniques. Therefore, it is urgently necessary to provide the students with the clinical simulation teaching aids.
In the future, in addition to providing the students with the course operations, all the obstetric midwifery and reproductive disorders diagnosis and treatment techniques can be demonstrated and recorded by the teachers, placed on the intramural iLearning teaching platform. We can provide the teaching materials for the inter-university remote teaching or self-learning by the inter-department students in the university to achieve the effect of the online learning in many ways.
