In 2020, Taiwan chose to send four types of seeds— Capsicum annuum L. (sweet pepper), Phalaenopsis equestris, Chenopodium formosanum koidz (Formosa Lambsquarters) and Helianthus annuus (sunflower)—into space. After 7 months of space travel, the seeds returned to earth in July 2021. National Chung Hsing University and National Space Organization held the event "Meet the Seeds of Space Travel". 85 elementary schools, junior high schools and senior high schools in Taiwan were selected to participate in the planting. On January 25, the finals and achievement exhibition were held at National Chung Hsing University. In the end, National Chia-Tung Agricultural Vocational Senior High School, Taichung Municipal Da-Dun Junior High School, and Pingtung City Ren-Ai Elementary School won the championships in each group respectively.
College of Agriculture and Natural Resources NCHU participated in the Asia Herb in Space (AHiS) project of National Space Organization and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), and provided the seeds of sweet pepper, Phalaenopsis equestris and Formosa Lambsquarters that had been in space to junior high school and senior high school teams to conduct planting research. In addition, sweet basil seeds that have never been in space were sent from Japan for the Taiwanese elementary school teams to observe the cultivation and compare with the planting in the space station, so as to promote astrobiology education.
In June 2021, the event was open to all schools for signing up, and a total of 119 schools have signed up, including 63 elementary schools, 37 junior high schools and 19 senior high schools and vocational high schools. A total of 85 schools were selected, including 41 elementary schools, 30 junior high schools, and 14 senior high schools. After receiving the seeds, the selected schools gave full play to creativity and designed experiments on their own, and submitted a written report and poster of the observation results of the seed planting process. After the evaluation by the professional review committee of College of Agriculture and Natural Resources NCHU, 34 schools, including 18 elementary schools, 10 junior high schools and 6 senior high schools, were shortlisted for the finals for oral presentations.
The top two in the elementary school group were Pingtung City Ren-Ai Elementary School and Bei-Da Elementary School from Sanxia District, New Taipei City. Yong-Jian Elementary School from Wenshan District, Taipei City and Guan-Shan Elementary School from Taichung City tied for third place. Kang Chiao International School Hsinchu Campus, Changhua City Nan-Guo Elementary School, Taichung City Le-Ye Elementary School, Tainan City Jins-Yue Elementary School, and Taipei City Xing-An Elementary School were selected as honorable mention.
The top three in the junior high school group were Taichung Municipal Da-Dun Junior High School, Taichung Municipal Si-Yu Junior High School, and Pingtung County Jiou-Ru Junior High School. Pingtung County Ming-Zheng Junior High School, Pingtung County Guang-Chun Junior High School, and Taitung County Bao-Sang Junior High School were selected as honorable mention. In the senior high school group, National Chia-Tung Agricultural Vocational Senior High School won the high distinction award, Taichung Municipal Xin-She Senior High School was selected as the merit award, and National Tainan Girls’ Senior High School was selected as the honorable mention.
