National Chung Hsing University (NCHU) held its commencement for the graduates on June 3rd. This was the first physical commencement after the COVID-19 pandemic and the venue was packed. This year's graduating class consisted of 3,930 students. Under the theme “Bright Path Ahead”, NCHU invited 27-year-old entrepreneur Jeff Hu, the founder of Turing Chain Limited, and the Ambassador of Belize to Taiwan, Dr. Candice Augusta Pitts to deliver words of encouragement.
In his speech, President Fuh-Sheng Shieu of NCHU encouraged the graduates to embody the courage of explorers, the meticulousness of scientists, and the determination of revolutionaries in the post-pandemic era. He stressed the importance of challenging and surpassing the status quo with the determination of an explorer, approaching situations with logical and precise scientific attitudes as a scientist, and demonstrating unwavering commitment and the willingness to move forward as a revolutionary. President Shieu expressed his expectation that the graduates would fearlessly face challenges, be diligent and precise in their endeavors, and contribute to society while upholding NCHU’s traditional values and pioneering spirit.
Jeff Wu, known in the media as the “blockchain genius”, grew up in Hsinchu. He received his bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and a master’s degree in Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley. In 2018, he founded Turing Chain Limited, which leverages blockchain technology to provide “Turing Certificates” and upgrades traditional paper certificates into digital resumes. He shared three stories about courage, luck, and ambition, hoping to provide guidance to the graduates of the next five years.
He pointed out that while professional competence and extensive preparation are essential and necessary, true success is determined by courage and execution. He shared the importance of courage based on his experience of taking on his first case during his senior year. He stated, “When a significant opportunity arises and you are scared, it may indicate that you are on the right path, as long as it is legitimate.” Jeff Hu often draws inspiration from former US President Thomas Jefferson’s words: “If you want something that you've never had, you must be willing to do something that you've never done.”
Jeff Hu then discussed the creation of luck, drawing from his experience of being rejected when he applied to graduate schools. He once received 18 rejection letters within a month, experiencing a major blow to his confidence. Struggling to regain his programming passion, he traveled to San Francisco and participated in a blockchain programming competition for two weeks. With the assistance of a friend, he won an award. With one more week left in the US, he plucked up the courage to send nine letters to professors, leading to responses from a Stanford University professor and two professors from the University of California, Berkeley. He unexpectedly obtained the opportunity to become a visiting scholar at the University of California, Berkeley in the first half year of 2021 and collaborated with a professor there to write a blockchain paper. Through this experience, he realized that the world is inherently filled with opportunities and that the flints that can create a spark of luck are in your hands. “Looking back on the journey, if at any point he hadn't struck that ignition to create luck, there wouldn't have been the first flicker of flame, nor the tremendous blaze that changed his life after going to the United States. He believes that luck can be made.
In an era where technological advancements have lowered the barriers to deception, identifying truth in the virtual world and discovering authentic information has become increasingly precious. Jeff Hu's aspiration in founding Turing Chain Limited is to become a conduit of trust in the future world, a trustworthy courier. He encouraged the graduates by saying, “In a society where the average age is 80, for the graduates present here, it is only 6 a.m. in the morning of your life. If you can discover or encounter your calling early on, understanding the reason why the world brought you into existence, it will make each of you an unstoppable executor.” Finally, he concludes with the words of Henry Ford, “Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, you're right.”, encouraging the graduates to pursue their lifelong aspirations without waiting.
The Ambassador of Belize in Taiwan, Dr. Candice Augusta Pitts also delivered words of encouragement. She first congratulated the graduates on successfully completing their studies after years of hard work, and she expressed her hope that students would broaden their horizons and face future challenges with confidence. In the meantime, she extended special congratulations to the graduating class from Belize, urging them to utilize their knowledge and contribute back to their homeland, using their own abilities to help those in need. Finally, she expressed gratitude and recognition to the Taiwan government, thanking National Chung Hsing University for providing an excellent learning environment and resources, and she expressed her hope for continued collaboration between the two countries.
