Professor Chen Chang of the NCHU Department of Horticulture and doctoral student Yi Tien Chiu successfully produced an intergeneric hybrid of the fragrant Oncidium Twinkle and the Tolumnia Jairak Flyer after eight years of careful cultivation and testing. The new species, named Oncidumnia Hsingda Fresh, was registered with the British Royal Horticultural Society in December 2023.

Oncidumnia Hsingda Fresh has lightly fragrant blossoms with a dark pink center and light pink edges. This early flowering, easy to cultivate variety has a upright growth habit, a pedicel height suited for pot planting, and boasts robust growth and an abundance of flowers. The floral structure and growth habits of this miniature pot-plant variety also differ from the potted Oncidumnia varieties currently on the market. After being successfully bred through plant tissue culture, large-scale cultivation of the new variety was achieved in greenhouses, where it demonstrated stable growth and proved to be highly ornamental. The extraordinary new variety was numbered Q380 and was licensed to Jia-Ho Orchids Nursery on February 2, 2024.

During test cultivation, Jia-Ho Orchids Nursery found that the new variety offers several advantages that help lower the cost of cultivation and make it easier to meet market demand. These include its small size, large bunch size, soft colors, and ease of cultivation. After trial sale at an affordable price in the Taiwanese market, cultivation of this variety will be scaled up for export to markets in the Americas and Europe.
