National Chung Hsing University (NCHU) held a groundbreaking ceremony for the “Training Center for International-Level Veterinary Specialists on Epidemic Prevention and Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital” on April 11th. The facility, located at the intersection of Guoguang Road and Zhongming South Road in Taichung City, will be constructed on the original site of the Veterinary Medical Hospital of NCHU. Spanning nearly 120,000 square meters, the building will comprise one underground floor and seven above-ground floors. The construction is expected to complete by the end of 2027, with the aim of establishing the largest veterinary education and demonstration site in central Taiwan.
The total construction cost of the building is 583 million NT dollars, with subsidies of 139 million NT dollars from the Ministry of Education and 70 million NT dollars from the Ministry of Agriculture. Floors 1 to 3 are designated for the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital, which includes examination rooms, wards, operating theaters, and laboratories. Specialties include internal medicine, surgery, ophthalmology, oncology, special pet care, large animals, and economic animals. Floors 4 to 6 will house the Training Center for International-Level Veterinary Specialists on Epidemic Prevention, featuring teaching and research spaces in fields such as epidemiology, pathological diagnosis, and public health. The 7th floor is reserved for large classrooms and event exhibition spaces.
President Fuh-Jyh Jan of NCHU stated that NCHU is the first university in Taiwan to establish a College of Veterinary Medicine and an important animal medical referral hospital in Taichung City. The original building of the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital, inaugurated in 1980, boasts a long history. The space, however is no longer sufficient for use. Rebuilding on the original site will not only improve the clinical teaching environment for veterinary medicine to meet international standards, but it will also enhance the integration between veterinary clinical professional education and epidemic prevention. This will help cultivate international talents in epidemic prevention, public health, and veterinary medicine for the production of economic animals.
