Chun-Ming Huang, acclaimed as a literary master and revered as a national treasure, was awarded an honorary Doctor of Literature degree by National Chung Hsing University (NCHU) on April 23. Simultaneously, an international academic conference dedicated to Chun-Ming Huang's literary achievements convened, celebrating his profound contributions to Taiwanese literature. Renowned for his prolific output, Huang's works frequently illuminate characters from the marginalized echelons of society, garnering widespread acclaim and numerous accolades. Remarkably, at the age of ninety, he continues his writing pursuits with diligence, demonstrating an unyielding commitment to his creative endeavors.
During his opening remarks, NCHU President Dr. Fuh-Jyh Jan expressed that Chun-Ming Huang's works not only showcase his love for the land but also chronicle Taiwan's social evolution. Many of his stories unfold in rural settings, employing literature as a catalyst to shed light on the significance of agriculture and the plight of farmers. This resonance echoes NCHU's enduring dedication to advancing Taiwan's agricultural benchmarks and fostering the welfare of farmers through scholarly inquiry. Hence, the bestowal of an honorary doctorate by NCHU, an institution deeply embedded in agricultural ethos, carries profound significance.
During his speech, Chun-Ming Huang expressed his heartfelt appreciation to National Chung Hsing University, stating, "I am deeply thankful to National Chung Hsing University. They continue to support and encourage me, even at my age of 90. Ninety is quite old, and as I've mentioned before, if an elderly person can't contribute, they risk stagnation, like a 'dead tree.' But now, with this kind of unwavering support and encouragement, of course, I can't just sit still. My mind is still relatively clear, and I can still accomplish something. It's like a dead tree blooming again in spring when it's touched by sunlight and warmth. I want to utilize this time to finish some projects, particularly children's books and a few novels. I will do my utmost. Thank you very much to National Chung Hsing University for giving me such tremendous strength."
After the conferment ceremony, the Chun-Ming Huang Literature International Academic Conference swiftly commenced. Over the course of the conference, 14 scholars from domestic and international backgrounds convened in four sessions to present scholarly papers. These presentations comprehensively explored different facets of Chun-Ming Huang's literary works, spanning poetry, novels, fairy tales, picture books, folk songs, children's plays, as well as translations and adaptations of his works. Particularly noteworthy were the contributions of two scholars from Japan and France, who respectively focused on the translation of Huang's works into Japanese and French.
