On June 12, the Times Higher Education (THE) released its latest Impact Rankings 2024, which evaluates institutions based on the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). National Chung Hsing University (NCHU) has made a significant leap, ranking 201-300 globally and eighth in Taiwan. Notably, five of its SDGs ranked 101-200 globally: SDG 2 “Zero Hunger” (6th in Taiwan), SDG 7 “Affordable and Clean Energy” (4th in Taiwan), SDG 12 “Responsible Consumption and Production” (5th in Taiwan), SDG 15 “Life on Land” (2nd in Taiwan), and SDG 17 “Partnerships for the Goals” (4th in Taiwan). This achievement highlights NCHU’s diverse and comprehensive commitment to sustainable development.

SDG 2 “Zero Hunger”
In terms of SDG 2, NCHU has pioneered Taiwan’s only national-level food safety testing platform, with the building donated by SinoPac Bank. This platform collaborates with multiple research centers and testing units, providing comprehensive farm-to-table testing services to ensure food safety across the country, thereby establishing a complete organic agriculture social responsibility circle. NCHU has also established the “Smart Sustainable New Agriculture Research Center,” integrating AI and agricultural research capabilities from across Taiwan. This center focuses on four main areas: AI core technology, smart detection, smart cultivation, and smart farming, with the ultimate goals of energy conservation, carbon reduction, labor saving, and sustainability in agriculture. NCHU’s agricultural scholars are actively leading research teams in large-scale international projects sponsored by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, such as the “Cassava Source-Sink Project” and the “International C4 Rice Improvement Project.” These projects aim to accelerate the mass production of nutritious food and enhance Taiwan’s agricultural research talent and international collaborations.

SDG 15 “Life on Land”
For SDG 15, NCHU founded Taiwan’s first veterinary school and is constructing an “International Epidemic Prevention and Teaching Hospital Building,” which will be the largest veterinary education demonstration site in central Taiwan. The university also established the first team dedicated to the medical care of stray animals, receiving the Ministry of Education’s “International Cooperation in Sustainable Development” University Social Responsibility (USR) Practice Plan. This team was invited to Guam for an island spay/neuter project, marking the first Taiwan-US spay/neuter collaboration, recognized by a special press release from the Governor of Guam. Additionally, NCHU participated in the earthquake rescue mission in Turkey, providing veterinary care for search and rescue dogs, showcasing Taiwan’s expertise in animal welfare and international rescue.

SDG 17 “Partnerships for the Goals”
NCHU has long promoted the New Southbound Policy in agriculture, assisting Southeast Asian countries in agricultural development through a “regional agricultural co-development” model, fostering mutual benefit and cooperation. NCHU pioneered the establishment of a New Southbound Office within a university, integrating the Scientific Research Platform for Industrialization and the Taiwan Gloria Center to promote research innovations globally. In line with the government’s New Southbound Policy, NCHU has established the VAAS-NCHU Agricultural Sciences and Technology Innovation Cooperation (VAAS-NCHU ASTIC) Center in Vietnam. This center has helped Vietnam become Asia’s largest passion fruit producer and the third-largest passion fruit juice exporter globally. It also aims to make Vietnam a leading producer of high-quality papayas in Asia within five years, exemplifying Taiwan’s efforts to export agricultural technology and develop international markets. Additionally, NCHU collaborates with Texas A&M University to promote international agricultural development in the New Southbound countries, co-hosting the GEAR-UP FORUM for over a decade, inviting agricultural leaders and scholars from these countries and U.S. partner schools, reinforcing its regional agricultural leadership. NCHU also collaborates with Indonesia to establish the VANS Cloud Joint Service Platform, enhancing cybersecurity capabilities for local institutions and schools, and fostering an industrial ecosystem that aligns Taiwan’s cybersecurity industry with international standards.

NCHU President Fuh-Jyh Jan stated that the university’s advancement in promoting University Social Responsibility (USR) and practicing Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) aligns with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the government’s 2050 net-zero emissions target. By integrating the spirit of sustainable development into university governance, education, research, and social services, NCHU has made significant progress. The university’s leap of over 100 places in the THE Impact Rankings 2024 compared to 2023 is a strong recognition of the commitment and efforts of the entire NCHU community towards sustainability. Looking ahead, NCHU plans to enhance the unique strengths of its various colleges and promote cross-disciplinary collaboration in agricultural biotechnology, intelligent manufacturing, healthcare, green energy and carbon reduction, and cybersecurity. By deepening local engagement, NCHU aims to transform central Taiwan into a “smart city with a healthy environment.” Furthermore, the university will expand its international partnerships, contributing to global sustainable development and fulfilling its social responsibilities.
