The Ministry of Examination announced the results of the first stage of the "113th Senior Professional and Technical Examinations for Medical Doctors" on September 10. All 23 students from the inaugural cohort (Class of 2022) of the Department of Post-Baccalaureate Medicine at the College of Medicine, National Chung Hsing University (NCHU), successfully passed, achieving an outstanding 100% pass rate. The top score among the students was 79.5, with an average score of 70, significantly surpassing the national pass rate of 55.08%.
Department of Post-Baccalaureate Medicine, NCHU, established in 2022, is the only national medical institution in central Taiwan. The program partners with Taichung Veterans General Hospital, Changhua Christian Hospital, Tung’s Taichung MetroHarbor Hospital, and the Show Chwan Healthcare System. Each year, it admits 23 students under a government-subsidized tuition program aimed at "cultivating medical professionals with humanistic care, altruistic service, and scientific literacy" to serve rural communities. This 100% pass rate in the national examination represents a significant milestone for both the faculty and students, marking a successful start on the path to becoming physicians.
Chang Hung-Hsuan, a representative of the Class of 2022, expressed pride in their achievement, stating, "Although our department is new, we have demonstrated our capability by excelling in the national exam. The anatomy course in our first year, in collaboration with Taichung Veterans General Hospital, was taught in their newly established anatomy lab by experienced clinical instructors. Additionally, the department’s investment in the 'Complete Anatomy' software provided us with an excellent foundation. We began preparing for the national exam during the winter break, and with the university lightening the coursework in our second semester, we were able to dedicate six months to focused exam preparation. With everyone passing this stage, we’re confident we can achieve similar success in the second stage."
Lee Wei, another top student from the cohort, shared her perspective, saying, "Transitioning from a medical technologist to a physician was driven by my desire to deepen my understanding of medicine and to help patients in new ways. Over the past two years, I’ve been determined to keep pushing forward. Achieving a strong result in the national exam reflects not only the unwavering support from NCHU’s faculty but also the preparation I had from my medical technologist licensing exam. Passing this first stage brings me closer to my dream, and as I move into clinical rotations, I’ll continue reviewing and refining my knowledge. I’m hopeful that I will pass the second stage in two years and become a qualified physician."
This remarkable 100% pass rate not only highlights the dedication of NCHU’s students and faculty but also underscores the success of the university’s medical education program. As these future physicians move forward into clinical studies, their achievements in the first stage of the national exam mark a promising beginning for the College of Medicine’s mission to cultivate skilled and compassionate medical professionals for Taiwan’s healthcare system.
