To deepen academic and research exchanges between Taiwan and Oman and explore future cooperation opportunities, Dr. Chi-Chung Chou, the Vice President and Director of the International Office at National Chung Hsing University (NCHU), recently led a delegation, including Dean of the College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Dr. Ching-Chih Tsai and Dean of the College of Engineering Dr. Ming-Der Yang, to Oman for an academic exchange visit. This visit not only strengthened the understanding between higher education institutions in Taiwan and Oman but also laid the foundation for cooperation in fields such as semiconductors and artificial intelligence.

Visit to Oman’s Top Three Universities: Showcasing Taiwan’s Academic Achievements
During the visit, the delegation met with faculty and administration at three of Oman’s top universities: Sultan Qaboos University (SQU), the German University of Technology in Oman (GUtech), and Sohar University (SU). These meetings not only showcased Taiwan’s excellence in the semiconductor and related academic fields but also promoted academic and institutional exchanges between the two countries.

Sultan Qaboos University, as Oman’s leading national university, is ranked in the top 500 universities globally by QS and enjoys high prestige in the Middle East. The Taiwanese delegation was warmly received by Professor Amer Saif Al Hinai, Vice President for Research and Graduate Education, and engaged in in-depth discussions about future academic exchanges, student exchange programs, and research cooperation. Professor Al Hinai emphasized SQU’s commitment to expanding its international presence and enhancing research capacity, noting that there are many areas of potential collaboration with NCHU, especially in engineering and agriculture. Both sides showed great interests in collaborating on semiconductors and high-tech fields, with plans for further cooperation in these areas.

The delegation then visited the German University of Technology in Oman (GUtech), Oman’s top private university, where they were welcomed by President Prof. Dr. Michael Braun and Vice President Hon. Dr. Hussain Al Salmi. They discussed the university’s achievements in science, technology, and the humanities, with over ten university administrators in attendance. In addition to exploring academic collaboration in semiconductors and artificial intelligence, both parties expressed strong interests in developing joint programs and courses.

Finally, the delegation visited Sohar University, Oman’s second-largest private university, where they met with President Dr. Hamdan Al Fazari and more than 20 academic administrators. Both sides engaged in productive discussions on strengthening academic cooperation, joint degree programs, and research collaboration, and they reached a preliminary agreement to move forward with these initiatives. Sohar University expressed a keen interest in recruiting NCHU’s outstanding faculty for joint appointments, signaling the potential for more in-depth collaboration.

Promoting Taiwan-Oman Higher Education Cooperation: Looking to the Future
This visit not only marked the beginning of academic and research cooperation between Taiwan and Oman but also opened up new opportunities for collaboration in higher education, strengthening the ties between the two countries in the areas of academic, educational, and cultural exchange. Taiwan’s expertise in semiconductors and artificial intelligence, particularly in electronics engineering and related technologies, has attracted considerable attention from the three leading universities in Oman. Both countries anticipate closer collaboration in areas such as student exchanges, faculty cooperation, joint programs, and research projects.

As Taiwan-Oman bilateral relations continue to grow, this visit is seen as a significant breakthrough in the history of higher education cooperation between the two nations. Both sides are eager to prioritize cooperation in educating talented young students and expanding academic research and technological innovation exchanges. This visit is expected to open new avenues for academic collaboration between Taiwan and Oman, offering fresh perspectives and opportunities for the academic community in the Middle East.
