National University System of Taiwan (NUST), composed of 14 national universities, held the USR Social Practice and ESG Local Revitalization Forum on November 15 and 16 in Chung-Hsing New Village. The two-day event, hosted by National Chung Hsing University (NCHU), brought together 111 faculty members and students from member universities. The program included five panel discussions and a USR Achievement Exhibition and Marketplace, inviting teams from various universities implementing University Social Responsibility (USR) projects to exchange ideas and collaborate to promote sustainable local development.
NUST is currently the largest higher education alliance in Taiwan, consisting of National Chung Hsing University, National United University, National Taiwan University of Sport, National Chin-Yi University of Technology, National Taichung University of Education, National Changhua University of Education, National Chi Nan University, National Yunlin University of Science and Technology, National Formosa University, National Chiayi University, National University of Kaohsiung, National Quemoy University, National Dong Hwa University, and University of Taipei.
NUST operates seven working groups for cross-university collaboration, covering teaching, research, international affairs, administration, libraries, and sports. Among these, the USR and Local Revitalization Working Group focuses on sharing experiences and fostering cooperation in the fields of University Social Responsibility and local revitalization.
This forum, an annual event of the NUST USR and Local Revitalization Working Group, was held in Chung Hsing New Village, a key site for NCHU’s local revitalization efforts. The five panel discussions covered three major topics: ESG, local revitalization, and USR. Sixteen distinguished scholars from eight universities—NCHU, National Taichung University of Education, National Chiayi University, National Chi Nan University, National Formosa University, National University of Kaohsiung, National Yunlin University of Science and Technology, and National United University—participated in the discussions. Additionally, four social enterprise leaders with extensive experience in community engagement shared their perspectives.
The USR Achievement Exhibition and Marketplace featured displays from 10 universities, showcasing the outcomes of their recent University Social Responsibility initiatives and encouraging inter-university observation and exchange.
Dr. Fuh-Jyh Jan, Chairman of NUST and President of NCHU, stated in his remarks that a key challenge in addressing global sustainable development lies in aligning university resources with the practical needs of local communities to create synergistic benefits. He expressed hope that this event would deepen exchanges among universities on ESG, local revitalization, and USR, enabling them to work together with innovative thinking and practical skills to drive local development.
