National Chung Hsing University (NCHU) boasts the most comprehensive expertise in natural carbon sinks in Taiwan, covering yellow carbon (soil), green carbon (forests), and blue carbon (oceans). In recent years, it has linked its efforts to national priority areas and nurtured high-level talent in the circular economy. On November 20, NCHU was honored with two prestigious awards from the Taiwan Institute for Sustainable Energy (TAISE): the "Top 10 Exemplary Sustainable Universities in Taiwan" and the "Platinum Award for Sustainability Report," achieving top rankings in both categories. These accolades underscore NCHU's exceptional achievements in sustainability.
Since 2021, NCHU has published its annual Sustainability Report, receiving recognition from the Taiwan Corporate Sustainability Awards (TCSA) for four consecutive years. For the past two years, it has been awarded the highest honors: the "Top 10 Exemplary Sustainable Universities in Taiwan" and the "Platinum Award for University Sustainability Reports." This year, the university's Sustainability Report also ranked first in the Platinum category, with Secretary-General Dr. Chang-Yen Lee accepting the award on behalf of NCHU.
NCHU President Fuh-Jyh Jan emphasized the critical role universities play in global sustainability as hubs of innovation and knowledge advocacy. NCHU leads Taiwan in natural carbon sink research, supported by a multidisciplinary team specializing in soil, forest, and ocean carbon sequestration. The university’s four experimental forests—Huisun, Sinhua, Dongshi, and Wenshan—have all achieved FSC international forest management certification, reaffirming its commitment to sustainable operations. Furthermore, NCHU has been actively advancing green energy technologies, including electric vehicles, energy-efficient equipment, waste energy recovery, and microgrids.
In integrating industry resources with national priorities, NCHU established Asia's first Academy of Circular Economy, attracting leading corporations to its NCHU Innovation Village in the southern hub of Chung Hsing New Village. This initiative focuses on cultivating advanced talent in circular economy technologies. Additionally, NCHU is the first university in Taiwan to establish an Office of Industrial Carbon Offset Promotions, supporting SMEs in developing low-carbon products and strategies to enhance their global competitiveness. The university has also pledged to achieve campus-wide net-zero emissions by 2040, aiming to set a benchmark for carbon-neutral campus operations in Taiwan.
In its commitment to sustainability, NCHU actively promotes energy conservation, carbon reduction, resource recycling, campus ecology, and green procurement. Looking ahead, the university will continue to implement interdisciplinary learning, leverage its research strengths, foster an environmentally friendly campus, engage in social responsibility, and drive innovation in industry-academic collaboration. By leading with expertise and connecting resources across sectors, NCHU aspires to make even greater contributions to Taiwanese society.
