This year (2024), National Chung Hsing University (NCHU) received a subsidy of NT$32.95 million from the Ministry of Education to complete the refurbishment of the north and west exterior walls of its gymnasium and the renovation of the second-floor badminton courts. On December 27, a completion ceremony was held to celebrate the upgrades. The event featured a ceremonial ball toss by NCHU President Fuh-Jyh Jan, Deputy Minister of Education Wan-Chien Chang Liao, former Minister of Education Wen-Chung Pan, former Minister of Agriculture Chi-Chung Chen, and Sports Administration Section Chief Li-Heng Wang, symbolizing the inauguration of the renewed sports facilities.

The NCHU gymnasium, originally built in 1985, had suffered from significant wear and tear over the years, with multiple instances of tile detachment and exposed steel reinforcements. To enhance the safety of sports activities for students and staff, NCHU secured NT$21.4 million from the Ministry of Education to revamp the exterior walls on the north and west sides of the gymnasium. The renovations included leveling the walls, enhancing waterproofing, upgrading nighttime lighting, replacing doors and windows, and installing heat-insulating film and sunshades on the west side of the facility. Construction began in late July 2024 and was completed by mid-December, giving the gymnasium a fresh, modern look.
The second floor of the gymnasium houses indoor courts capable of accommodating 12 badminton courts, which can also be converted into three volleyball courts or two basketball courts. Apart from being used for physical education classes and training by school sports teams, the courts are available for rental by public and private groups for various large-scale events during evenings and weekends.

The badminton courts, which have been in use for nearly 40 years, had suffered from severe wear, including raised nails and damaged flooring, despite multiple repairs. To support the government’s policy of doubling the number of people participating in sports and promoting the use of school facilities by the public, the Sports Administration provided NT$11.55 million to replace the wooden flooring. Renovations took place from July to mid-September 2024, and students and faculty began using the upgraded courts this semester. Many students have noted the improved stability and comfort of the flooring during activities.

President Fuh-Jyh Jan expressed his gratitude to the Ministry of Education for its generous financial support, as well as to Deputy Minister Wan-Chien Chang Liao, former Minister Wen-Chung Pan, former Minister Chi-Chung Chen, and Section Chief Li-Heng Wang for attending the ceremony to witness the opening of the renovated facilities. NCHU has long been committed to maintaining high-quality sports facilities, serving as a venue for major national competitions while fostering a culture of exercise and competitive spirit among students and staff. In recent years, the university’s sports teams have achieved remarkable results in national competitions, reflecting its dedication to sports and physical education. The upgraded facilities not only enhance safety but also contribute significantly to the development of sports at NCHU and in central Taiwan.

Deputy Minister Wan-Chien Chang Liao commended NCHU as a friendly campus that shares its sports facilities with the community. As the first national university in central Taiwan, NCHU bears a significant social responsibility. He also acknowledged the efforts of former Minister Pan Wen-Chung in increasing funding for both basic and higher education during his tenure, laying a solid foundation for continued progress in Taiwan’s education system. Deputy Minister Chang also thanked former Minister Pan for initiating the Friendly Campus Project, which supported the first phase of the gymnasium’s exterior wall renovation, and the Sports Administration for funding the premium flooring. He wished students a fulfilling university experience in their enhanced learning environment.

Former Minister Pan Wen-Chung noted that NCHU is not only a leading university in central Taiwan but also a key venue for various important competitions. He praised the university’s efficient use of Ministry of Education resources to maximize impact in a short period, expressing his gratitude to President Jan and his team for their dedication.
